It is now well past four in the morning and I have staggered in from one of the best days of activism possibly in my life, certainly in Dublin. My eyes are old, my knees are weak and my nose is knackered, but before I collapse into bed I thought I would share one final thought for the day on #OccupyDameStreet.

It started at 2pm with barely thirty people, by five pm there were maybe a hundred and fifty, and still at midnight there were at least a hundred folks and ten tents. By 4am when we left there were half a dozen more tents and a marquee hosting a consensus decision making assembly - did I mention this was at 4am ! This was certainly not the largest protest to grace the streets of Dublin, but without doubt I have never seen its like here before. There were veterans of many marches and folks for whom this was their first act of political defiance, and everything came together organically with no leaders, no parties, no egos and no power-tripping. There were no spokespeople and yet everyone was a spokesperson, there was no single message yet at times everyone managed to literally speak with one voice. There was anger but no violence, discontent but no apathy and despite the gravity of the injustices highlighted, the day itself was one of unrelenting positivity. It was quite simply a perfect example of how things could be.

About 80 people have gathered outside the central bank in Dublin as part of an “Occupy Dame Street” protest.

The movement is in solidarity with the mass “Occupy Wall Street” demonstrations taking place in New York since last month in protest against financial greed.

Dublin protesters have listed their demands that the IMF and EU “stay out” of Irish affairs, that ordinary people do not repay bank debt, that there be reform of the political system for “real participatory democracy” and that oil and gas reserves of the coast “be return to the people”.

As with protesters in the US, they say they are defending 99 per cent of the population against the richest 1 percent.

At least 50 people camped overnight last night on Dame Street. Up to 100 were participating or watching the general assembly meeting today at 3p.m. About a dozen large and small tents in situ plus a central sheltered area. Gardai saying they don't have a problem with the occupation as long as it stays non-violent and doesn't obstruct access to the Central Bank or the pavement. Plenty of consensus decision-making meetings happening, and various sub-groups set up for food, construction, media, security, health, coordination.

Day two of protest outside Central Bank

Organisers asked for no political party or trade union banners to avoid “hijacking” of the event.

Individual protesters told The Irish Times they were not associated with any organisations and were there as individuals. Protester Lee Page (35) from Dublin said. “I’ve always voted, I had my own business. I’ve a master’s degree. I played along with all the rules. I’ve done what they say to do, go to college, get a job. I don’t want to be branded some foolish hippy.” He wants to “begin a conversation” politicians should have had in 2008.

The US embassy in Dublin issued an emergency warning to its citizens on Friday about the “anti-financial sector protest in the vicinity of the Central Bank”.

Tours planned as part of the Open House Dublin festival were cancelled for “security reasons”, declared a sign outside the bank.

lads @ Occupy Dame Street, no doubt its already been great, love to be there with ye physically, but cant, so am in support from afar.

At the early stage, theres much cynical shite to be dealt with, dont mind them, you'll get there, just look at Occupy Wall Street to see how it mushroomed. Theres 2 articles i want to share with ye, the first is from the early days in porta del sol, where it all kicked off in Spain, small at first, but then soon it turned into the Spanish Revolution... its an article from ZNet by andy price, he talks about how many "spectators" came to view the odd goings on, both locals and tourists alike, but soon, they got the basic ideas and soon were participating... and it grew and grew.

But what happened next surprised everyone: that afternoon, an everyday, working Tuesday afternoon, 4,000 people returned to Sol, as the plaza is known locally, to protest all over again. And this time, it was not solely los jóvenes, the young: there were people there of all ages, of all backgrounds, the employed and the unemployed, all united by the principle drive of this movement to protest against a political class that has let the people down.

When they ran out of lampposts, they erected new ones: metal poles, solidified into buckets of cement, appeared everywhere, and they tied more tarpaulin, and more roof shelter to every one. By Thursday, a sheltered, tented community had emerged. Indeed, a mini-city had emerged, a democratic city in the classic Athenian sense of the word.

The walkways of this tented city were not only to allow free movement of the people living on the camp, but to allow the free movement of the other essential ingredients in all of this political play in the centre of Madrid: the tourist and the passer-by.

But on Thursday night, because of the shrewd planning of the camp protesters, the tourists and the passers-by were no longer transfixed by the juggler or the artists imitating statues. Rather, they were mingling through the camp, transfixed by the sheer number of meetings: they could see people in meetings everywhere, talking, debating, taking votes and recording the details. If this on its own was not enough of a rarefied sight, then the fact that every committee meeting was surrounded by the tourists and the locals, all watching with keen interest what was happening, brought an air of surreality to it all. In 20 years of attending protests and demonstrations, meetings and conferences, I have never seen such engagement, from both those involved, but even more fascinatingly, from those passing-by.

Occupy Wall Street has already weathered the usual early storms. The kept media ignored the protest, but that failed to end it. The partisans of inequality mocked it, but that failed to end it...

Let me urge the occupiers to ignore the usual carping that besets powerful social movements in their earliest phases. Yes, you could be better organised, your demands more focused, your priorities clearer. All true, but in this moment, mostly irrelevant. Here is the key: if we want a mass and deep-rooted social movement of the left to re-emerge and transform the United States (or ireland for that matter), we must welcome the many different streams, needs, desires, goals, energies and enthusiasms that inspire and sustain social movements. Now is the time to invite, welcome and gather them, in all their profusion and confusion.

It is surprisingly uplifting though to see that despite a night of no sleep and explaining exactly what they are doing to every drunken passer-by on their way down to the taxi-rank, a bitterly cold wind that threatens to rip apart the camp every few minutes and the imminent prospect of a forced eviction in the morning, that tonight's General Assembly was conducted without alarm, without panic and without tension.

Even if this all ends suddenly in the morning #OccupyDameStreet have shown through their actions and voices that another world is possible. How that is manifested beyond Dame Street is up to us.

Here is South America before social movements forced the restructuring of an illicit debt burden (the defaults) the IMF told Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile etc. etc. to give away their energetic resources. In Argentina three years before the collapse the "government" privatized the oil company to Spanish multinational Repsol, also financial as well as other natural resources were "sold" (for debt) at ridiculous prices. The newly discovered fossil fuel resources in Ireland are Irish (duhh)... They should never have been private. Take them back! Great idea! it will help to regenerate the economy and put the country back on its feet while protecting the coast from dangerous private oil development imposing a state monitored and implemented safety standard.

Good luck on Dame Street, let the IMF know how welcome they are !!!

I would agree with you 100% about the Republic of Ireland taking back all of our untapped oil and gas recourses which were "given away" by unconstitutional skulduggery, "legal corruption" (so called), and so on: provided of course that they are firmly but gently taken back by peaceful, lawful, and constitutional means.

Article 10 of Bunreacht na hEireann (the written Constitution of the Republic of Ireland) very clearly states that "All natural resources ... belong to the State". For all those who might not yet know, the full text of Article 10 reads as follows:

"All natural resources, including the air and all forms of potential energy, within the jurisdiction of the Parliament and Government established by this Constitution and all royalties and franchises within that jurisdiction belong to the State subject to all estates and interests therein for the time being lawfully vested in any person or body."

Worth noting also are the following two matters:

"BP's (British Petroleum's) office had been disrupted for a second day Thursday as Russian bailiffs (accompanied by armed police) looked for a broad range of documents requested in a $3 billion lawsuit by investors in the oil company's Russian joint venture."

"Credible reports suggest the untapped oil and gas resources of the Republic of Ireland -- which appear to have all, or almost all, already been "given away" (unconstitutionally) apparently -- to have a value in the region of 5.4 trillion Euros."

What Protest? Nobody noticed ye.

Somebody put up a link to the Irish Times article, and it was also on RTE Radio.

And hundreds if not thousands of people pass by that space every day.

You might not have noticed it, but other people did.

Some outreach to the homeless might be good - the peace camp outside Parliament in Westminster changed the lives of some homeless people, who became active in that event.
There hasnt been any real attempt to reach out to the homeless since Street Seen disappeared five or six years back. Many of them need a safe space to stay at night - they're real people and they have just as much a say, if not more, in the rip off that the banker culture performed on society.

What was supposed to be a quick run in with coffees for the early morning risers on Day Three of Occupied Dame Street got unexpectedly delayed by the sudden arrival of Ireland's meeja. I have learned three things about Ireland's meeja today, a) they don't work on the weekend, B) they don't like early mornings and c) none are willing to be the first to cover a difficult story, but once the first has broken cover they all descend en masse like piglets at a trough, scrabbling over each other and fighting for the same scraps. Around 11:30 this morning came the first interviewer from the Irish Times, followed by RTE radio, Today FM, Spin FM, a different part of RTE radio and finally TV3 with cameraman and looming reporter. As the phone batteries of the Overnighters had long since gone the way of Irish Sovereignty, Unkie Dave's phone was pressed into meeja duty facilitating a number of on-air interviews (as I jumped around the camp shouting "I'm participating! I'm participating!", though mostly in my head). I almost managed to avoid talking to any journalists myself, only crumbling at the last minute when caught off-guard by The Irish Times Online. Sneaky little Journalistses.

A “TENT town” of protesters outside the Central Bank in Dublin has vowed to remain in place “as long as it takes”, although they remained uncertain yesterday as to what exactly their demands are.

By lunchtime yesterday about 20 tents had been erected and were still standing against high winds, having all been tied together as they cannot be pinned to the concrete surrounding the Central Bank.

Placards and posters erected around the tents have slogans such as “Is this a crime scene?” – referring to the Central Bank; “Troika = Junta” and “Fermoy says ‘No’ to Bondholder Bailouts”.

“It is pretty cold but we are keeping warm and morale is good. I am feeling better than I have done in months, really energised,” said Mr Page.

The donations of food from members of the public and local restaurants are astonishing, never underestimate the generosity of your fellow citizens, or the importance of Gaffer Tape and a set of cable ties, not necessarily at the same time.

Where Working Groups interact with the general public outside of Occupied Dame Street (like the Media Group), they bring their ideas back to a General Assembly for approval or alteration, where they deal solely with life inside the camp (like Construction), they usually work autonomously with the consensus of the smaller group of Overnighters and long-term Day-Trippers. Anybody can volunteer to be on a Working Group, whether an Overnighter or a Day-Tripper, and as I can attest sometimes you find yourself in a group because you are foolish enough to hold up a tarp, pass somebody a rope and the next thing you know you are rostered down for an 8am windbreak-making session.

The interaction with, and the support of, the general public makes all of this go faster, whether it is the near constant beeping of horns from cars driving by, to folks dropping in to bring supplies or just say "well done!". A taxi-driver brought in chairs, tables and a blackboard this morning at 10:30, a builders' supplier came in to see what more construction material was needed, printers have offered flyers for free and the amount of blankets, pillows and food donated in response to Tweets was staggering, the camp was awash with fresh coffees and teas this morning, pizzas in the evening and a crate of apples at close to midnight. While there are hecklers and troublemakers who drop down drunkenly at 3am just to get a rise out of the hippies and the lefties, all the stress this causes is washed away the moment a passing mum sends her child over to drop off some jammy-dodgers. People are just amazing.

Actually, I think that is the main lesson to be learned from three days of #OccupyDameStreet - People are just amazing. I went down on Saturday to see what it was all about and have ended up spending around twelve hours of every day there since, and doing something that I rarely do, participating.

The camp movement is older than the New York example and goes back to the M15/DRY movement that occupied the mains squares of Spanish cities in the summer which also spread to cities in Greece and Italy. This also saw solidarity demonstrations in Ireland which involved up to 500 people but which didn't get as far as holding day and night camp outs. But that movement in turn was obviously influenced by the 'Arab Spring' and in particular the Tahir Square occupation which led to the revolution in Egypt.

The other common point of departure is a rejection of the organised left and union leadership, the Dublin demonstration like many of the others asks people not to bring left or union flags or banners.

The hope of the organizers is that this movement can have an appeal much broader that that of the existing left. To date this has not manifested itself, the numbers coming out to support these demonstrations have been similar to any of the other recent anti-cuts protests organised by left factions and only a tiny fraction of the tens of thousands the unions have mobilized. But the hope is that unlike those 'turn up and listen to a speech' protests that active participation element of the assemblies will engage people and encourage them to go and organize in turn.

And with that, id request that rather than just slagging off (which is very easy to do) that you offer your positive and constructive views on how things can be improved. Thats why all this stuff is working, thats why so many beyond the "normal crowd" are joining, adding their views, being energised, becoming hopeful again, taking action.... trying to change their worlds

I warmly commend the people involved and hope to visit in the near future, however, while the analysis on the economics is spot on there is no mention of the environment. Of course Ireland, US, UK are tax havens and international mega capital are pulling the strings. The analysis has to go deeper. No point having an economy if we don't have a biosphere. It would look like the living Hell that is Star Trek, where Nature has become a hologram or projection.

Your above statement is indicative of why I cannot support the #Occupy movement.
Any differening opinion gets slated & is unacceptable to this movement.
You claim to be "all inclusive" but refuse to accept anyone who does not support your political dogmas.
You claim to represent "the 99%" while you clearly don't.
You refuse to accept that while I dissagree with your means & goals that we still have the same enemy.

Your arguments are well intended but will achieve little. The assumption that a few people in tents are going to make the bankers and politicians aware that there is dissent with their actions is utterly mornonic.
They already know that the majority of people object strongly to their action but they DON'T CARE!

There are other movements for change that have been going on for much longer than the #occupy movement but which have chosen a less public path as they strive for maximum effectiveness and minimum exposure.

I support any protest that attempts to point the finger at where it should be pointed, however, the analysis has to go much deeper. The liberated worker-as-consumer is as less threatening to the real status quo as is the current situation.

We’ve hit the proverbial wall, and this will be the defining reality of our lives from now on.

The growth-seeking political-economic system has failed us. Today that system is dominated by Wall Street.

You courageous people in the #occupy movement are absolutely right in saying the system is broken, greedy, and unfair. But when our discussion turns to replacing the current system, we’ve got to embrace a bigger view of reality than the one held by stock traders and politicians. It's not just our wealth they want to control, it's our vision for what is both possible and necessary. We need a post-growth economy that works both for people (all of them) and for the rest of nature: a localized economy based on renewable resources harvested at nature’s rates of replenishment, not a fossil-fueled global economy driven by the imperative of ever-higher returns on investment.

There will be life after growth — and it can be a better life if our nation’s priority is the quality of life of our people and the integrity of the biosphere, rather than stock prices and corporate profits.

As people like former US President Abraham Lincoln very clearly and correctly (in my opinion) realised, it is "government of the people, by the people, for the people" (i.e. genuine democracy) that humanity desperately needs: and NOT "government of the corrupt ruling elites, by the corrupt ruling elites, for the corrupt ruling elites" (i.e. cleverly concealed debt-slavery and tyranny) of the kind which the Republic of Ireland, together with all (or almost all) other nations of the world are at present saddled with: thanks in very large part to the "Global Banking Cartel", and their "Invisible Global Government".

WORLDVIEW: WHEN RADICAL sociologist Naomi Klein addressed the Occupy Wall Street camp in Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan last week, she echoed in a rhetorical question what many have asked of Ireland’s passivity in the face of the recent economic crisis. The baffled TV pundits ask why they are protesting, she said. “Meanwhile, the rest of the world asks: ‘What took you so long?’"

In Dame Street a suggestion that the group should incorporate an anti-capitalist message in its brief manifesto was rejected: for some that is part of the analysis, for others a step too far. If it is to emerge as part of the programme it will be slowly, through the laborious process of building unanimity.

And the Dame Street group’s insistence that those who join must leave their political party behind will also frustrate those on the traditional left who would like to associate with them.

“Sometimes the most courageous story is the one that says: I haven’t seen this before. I’m not sure what it means. I don’t have a clue where it is going.”

“There’s something happening here,” Krugman writes. “What it is ain’t exactly clear, but we may, at long last, be seeing the rise of a popular movement that, unlike the Tea Party, is angry at the right people.”

I STOPPED BY the Occupy Dame Street protest on the way home the other night and what struck me most was how extraordinarily nice the whole thing is. It’s so polite and well-behaved that it could almost be some new kind of civic amenity laid on by City Hall

Maybe these young protesters have concluded that, since being rude doesn’t seem to work, politeness can be more subversive. They might be right. Marvelling at the propriety of their campaign the other night, for example, I found myself looking at the building behind them in a new and harsher light.

I suspect apathy and inertia might still prevent people taking to the streets in large numbers. The national default, however bad things are, is to shrug and carry on, hoping things get better (while expecting them to get even worse). If action is required, we can always emigrate.

You can be sure they had their well heeled salaries stashed in the same hedge-funds to balance their portfolios with insurance for the predictable inevitable as they milked it to the peak, and drained it to the dreg.

There is a very big problem though, in that any politician who tries to put this very simple and socially benign approach into practice, is very likely -- it would seem -- to end up "getting the bullet" (literally!!): as did Abraham Lincoln.

When former President John F. Kennedy tried to do the same kind of thing, 100 years or so after Abraham Lincoln, he also ended up with fatal bullet wounds to his head.

The above worry aside, there is no good reason whatsoever why any government (including the Republic of Ireland) should not produce its own debt free and interest free currency: for its own responsible purposes.

The latest group to join in the international protest which began on Wall Street in the heart of America’s financial district battled gale-force winds and torrential rain in flimsy tents on Eyre Square since they set up camp on Saturday. 

 At one stage at the height of the 60km-per-hour winds it looked like the protest would be called off after the main shelter – a gazebo – was blown down on Monday morning.  

The group retired for what was labelled an urgent meeting in Richardson’s pub but at the time of going to press the group, which is living in about six tents, continued to tweet and post messages on Facebook...

Good on ye, however, the choice of books doesn't fill me with optimism. We don't need a more decent form of Capitalism, we need and end to exploitation of humans and the natural world. The analysis must go much, much deeper. The no-growth, nature-healing future is the only alternative. I applaud anyone who gets off their ass and does something, however, we must be certain what is the vision for the future. Even a more benign version of our culture will kill the planet, albeit a bit slower.

A new movement, calling itself 'Occupy Cork' has taken up residence at a makeshift campsite in Cork City centre and says the site is open to anyone who feels let down by the political and financial establishment. Occupy Dublin: Take back the world they have stolen from us

When you have lived a long life, you will find that the years blur together, but some years stand out. 2011 will be a stand out year.

For some of us active on the left for many years, we have been asking what would it take for people to rise up. There has been every reason to rise up. Every form of exploitation has flourished.

Redistribution from below to above has intensified beyond anything ever imagined. Transferring private debts into public ones as been an absolutely stunning move. Financial capital has attacked, not only the lives and livelihood of the working people of the world, but even industrial capital. Industrial capital at least produces something. Hedge funds, short selling and such financial instruments produce nothing and take everything. They are parasitic upon the only real sources of wealth: natural resources and human labour. They contribute nothing.

How could people just take this? How could they allow the 1% to rob and rule the 99%? Why has such stepped-up class struggle from above not been met by class struggle from below?

2011 has been the year when vast numbers came out and said no. They have come out, we have come out, to take back the world they have stolen from us. From Tunisia to Egypt to Spain to Chile to the USA and many places in between. Now here. Iceland and Greece, of course, were already out in front, shaming us. But not now. We are on the streets and squares of almost 1000 cities in 82 counties on 6 continents today. There is something happening here. Most of these are new people, people new to protest, although the old ones, waiting and working for this to happen, are part of it too.

I am looking for answers to the above question. I am all for the leftist critique and we've always known that the strings are pulled by a few to the disadvantage of the many. What is not clear is what does the possible future look like? I really want to get more involved, however, from what I am seeing thus far, the analysis does not go far enough. Can someone outline the picture of the future you want to bring in to existence? I fear that it will be one of greater redistribution of wealth, which is welcome, but could be ecologically no better or even worse than what we have. I really want to be part of this so please see my questions in the postive way they are meant. Thanks and stay warm and dry!

The article above wrongly cites America and 'Occupy Wall Street' as the start of the current movement -

'current movement initiated by Occupy Wall Street (occupywallst.org)'.

It wasn't OWS - it was the Indignados (or May 15th) movement in the Placa del Sol in Madrid, quickly followed at Placa Catalunya in Barcelona, that kick-started it. Then a host of other Spanish cities and sites throughout Europe, in solidarity with the Spanish indignados. The start was May 15th.

Occupy Wall Street is a spreading of that same protest (which itself was obviously encouraged by the Arab uprisings in Spring) and the protests in Dublin etc. are a further spreading.

Well worth reading.

If the Occupy Dame Street is to achieve anything beyond any other brief, "horizontal" network that disappears after a couple of months (cf. Real Democracy Now, 1% Network, Social Solidarity Network, and so on), it needs to come up with a plan - and maybe one (small) objective to work towards.

Capitalism does well because it is terrifyingly organised. But I dont think I ever saw anything approaching what you could call Project Management amongst left groups in Ireland. No timespan of activity, no arc of actions, no delegation of tasks (again this could be related to the tyranny of structurelessness, where leaders do actually exist, but are unwilling to acknowledge it themselves for ideological reasons), no definitive 'end' or 'result' (good or bad) declared at the end of a project, just drift...

I think Occupy Dame Street is a good thing - its opening up a space for debate and discussion.
But it will grow stale, quick. Especially when the clocks go back and the rain kicks in, hard.

Come join us on Saturday the 5th of November #occupydamestreet will hold a Barn Raiser and 'Birthday Party' to celebrate and build on four weeks of continuous occupation of the Central Bank Plaza.

To mark the occasion #occupydamestreet will call together all of those who have participated in the occupation to date.

A 'Barn Raising' will take place from 9am onward where the infrastructure of the camp will be solidified and developed. The birthday party involving, a large group of artists exhibiting, music, an open mic for entertainers, kazoos, reunions and a big cake will take place between 2.30 and 5.30pm.

After the party #occupydamestreet will hold, as is usual at the site of the occupation, a general assembly at 6pm. The assembly will focus on reflecting on the past and future of the occupation.

A little art project in a big city

What does FREEDOM mean to you? Lets think long term. Lets think towards the world we would like to see exist. Down here at Occupy Dame Street we are looking to get people involved in many different ways. We are hoping to brighten up the place and also to see the people of Ireland (and everywhere else!) getting inspired and creative! We would like to see lots of thought-provoking and inspiring artwork hanging around the big grey bank.

To get involved in the project, please create a painting or picture of what freedom means to you or your idea/interpretation of freedom. The paintings can be on wood (mdf wood is good, you can buy it for less than €10 in woodies or bnq and get it cut to whatever size you want) or canvas panels, any size, any medium (pen/marker/paint/grafitti/mosaic/collage/mixed media).. whatever makes you happy. Please varnish them back and front with varnish from a hardware store as they will be hanging outdoors. (we haven't had time to build an art gallery yet :) write your name on them too, if you like.

You can drop them to the camp in person, or post them to occupy dame street, central bank plaza, dublin city, ireland. please suggest this to all your friends, even people in other countries, as it is a good way to let people have an input and support us, even from far away. Don't feel like you have to be a wonderful artist to take part, everyones input is welcome and valid...including children (we would love to see some childrens art included in the project)! We also hope to have some creative days at the camp where people can come down, get together and create some artwork onsite. 'Occupy Dame St' protest camp dismantled by gardaí

The "Occupy Dame Street" protest camp site outside the Central Bank in Dublin has been dismantled by gardaí.

The encampment was established last October as part of the global anti-capitalist "Occupy" movement.

Gardaí moved in on the camp at 3.30am and dismantled and removed a number of structures and tents on the site as protesters were held back.

As many as 100 gardaí were involved in the operation, and Dame Street was cordoned off from Trinity College to George's Street. The area was cleared and then cleaned by council workers.

The move comes following recent calls on the protesters to leave the Central Bank plaza ahead of the St Patrick's Day parade.

A protest is planned at the site for later today.
