About - Riada

Gleann Riada, Longford is a housing estate made up of 79  properties in Ireland.  It's build was signed off by the local council five years ago, residents and landlords bought the properties off a private developer who has since stopped trading. The properties were taken over by NAMA this year. A block of apartments, which were condemned and have never been inhabited, on the edge of the estate were demolished in July, following the agreement by local government to remove because of major health and safety risks.

The remaining homes have been deemed unsafe to live in following a HSE report published last week.  The properties have structural issues beyond repair and as a consequence have a build up of toxic gas present from broken sewerage pipes. High levels of methane, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphate are present in the estate and have already caused two explosions.  Residents have been asked to rectify the damage themselves by their local authority; engineers say is beyond repair.   Advice issued to residents asks them to leave all windows open and to avoid lighting fires.

Gleann Riada residents are campaigning for support to be relocated into the many NAMA owned houses left derelict around Ireland.
