Film Screening in Daingean
The best of recent Irish Short Films will once again screen in Daingean at the end of the month. The screening will take place in Seery’s, Daingean [www.facebook/seerys bar] on Thursday 31st July, starting at 7.00 pm. The closing short film RUNNER will have local filmmaker, Paddy Slattery in attendance. As always, admission is free to the bilingual screening agus beidh fáilte roimh Gaeilge ar an óiche.

Local filmmaker, Paddy Slattery, will be in attendance to introduce RUNNER, which has already screened worldwide at Film Festivals, since its release in 2013. The post-screening discussion will raise the difficulties by filmmakers in funding their projects. (They say that in a recession, the first to go is the Arts!). Their passion for their creative craft is not matched by sufficient funding towards completion. So how can we help?

After, the 7.00 screening of Irish Shorts, the night will proceed at 9.00 with a screening of the very stimulating PERIPHERAL VISION, the latest documentary by Donnacha Ó Briain (synopsis below) [www.peripheralvision.co].

The last days of Peter Bergmann [Éire/2013/19'] Ciaran Cassidy
Tháinig fear a thug Peter Bergmann air fhéin go Sligeach i samhradh na bliana 2000. I rith a thrí lá dheireannach chuir sé go leor dua ar fhéin chun a chinntiú nach bhfaighfí amach céarbh é, nó cé as a tháinig sé.
In the Summer of 2009, a man calling himself Peter Bergmann arrived in Sligo town. Over his final three days, he went to great lengths to ensure that no one would ever discover who he was, or where he came from.

Runner is a psychological drama about a young successful man who tragically kills a girl in a 'hit and run' accident & foolishly attempts to carry on with his life as though nothing happened.

Peripheral Vision [Éire/2013/125’] Donnacha Ó Briain
Ó 2008 tá Éire aitheanta go hidirnáisiúnta dá polaitíocht fíor-fhulangach ghéilliúil. Fós féin, tá grúpaí beaga ag déanamh iarrachtaí an pobal a chuir ar an airdeall i gcoinne tarrtháil na mbanc agus géire eacnamaíochta. Tá taithí shóisialta an mhionlaigh bheag sin á insint ag Donnacha Ó Briain (stiúrthóir a fuair árd-ghradam) sa scannán faisnéise seo a ghlac 12 mí lena dhéanamh – iad siúd a sheas an fód i rith tréimhse chinniúnach i stair na hÉireann.

Leanann an scannán cinniúint roinnt des na tionscnaimh beaga is tábhachtaí a láinseáladh i 2011-12, san áireamh Spectacle of Defiance & Hope i mBaile Átha Cliath a ghlac ionsparáid ó Réabhlóid na Fraince le leabhar ‘Books of Grievance’, agus pobal stuama Bhaile Uí Shé i gCorcaigh Thuaidh, a thosaigh mórshiúl seachtainiúil i gcoinne íocaíocht do shealbhóirí bannaí.

Déanta go simplí i cinema verité, léirionn an scannán fíricí agus frustrachas na ngníomhaithe atá ag iarraidh gluaiseacht shóisialta a thógáil i gcoinne fiacha bainc, i dtréimhse a bhfuil dearcadh polaitiúil an phobail ar nós-cuma-liom agus géilliúil.

Since 2008 Ireland has become a by-word internationally for political passivity & resignation. However, in reality, small groups have attempted to mobilize the public against the bank bailouts and austerity. This documentary, filmed over 12 months by award-winning director Donnacha Ó Briain, chronicles the experiences of some of this small minority – those who took a stand during one of the most momentous periods in Irish history.
The film follows the fortunes of some key grassroots initiatives launched in 2011-12: including the Dublin-based Spectacle of Defiance & Hope with its French Revolution-inspired ‘Books of Grievance’; and the dogged villagers of Ballyhea in North Cork, who started a weekly march against the bondholder pay-outs.
Filmed in raw cinema verité, the film charts with immediacy the realities and frustrations of those trying to build a social movement against bank debt in Ireland during an age of political indifference and passivity. [www.peripheralvision.co]
