If the BBC is never going to question Net Zero, what's the point of employing so many journalists, asks Chris Morrison. They might as well be replaced with AI and save the public a heap of money.

Public talk: From Shannon to Lesvos: Cause and Effect in the Refugee Crisis

category limerick | anti-war / imperialism | event notice author Tuesday December 08, 2015 22:13author by shannonwatch - shannonwatch Report this post to the editors

A public talk entitled 'From Shannon to Lesvos: Cause and Effect in the Refugee Crisis' will take place in Perys Hotel, Glentworth St. Limerick on Thursday Dec 10th at 7.30pm. It will provide a first-hand perspective on the human consequences of war for refugees fleeing from violence, and will explore the implications of Shannon Airport’s support for military interventions in the Middle East.

As war in Syria enters its fifth year, millions of people continue to flee for their lives from the extreme violence. In response, Europe is closing its borders and erecting razor wire fences.

ZOE LAWLOR
of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) spent a week providing practical assistance and bearing witness to refugees on the move to the island of Lesvos in Greece on their journeys through Fortress Europe. She describes her first hand experiences of what the people fleeing from the violence have to go through..

JOHN LANNON of Shannonwatch looks at Ireland and in particular Shannon Airport's role in creating the wars that have resulted in this refugee crisis. He outlines how the government’s decision to take very small numbers of refugees from Syria is not enough, given the crisis and their role in creating it.

The illegal occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan - which the Irish government supported - have played a large part in the current waves of violence and terrorism in the Middle East and Europe. It is now time for Ireland and Europe to develop a more effective and humane foreign policy in response to the refugee crisis.

Where: Perys Hotel, Glentworth St. Limerick

When: Thurs 10th Dec 7:30pm - 9pm

All are welcome to attend the talk.
