Dublin man, Simon Scriver will go for gold in the World Championship of Public Speaking in Washington DC, on August, 18th to 20th. Simon is the current Ireland and UK champion which he won recently in Limerick with his speech “Nuggets of Gold”. This is the final round of a contest with entrants from 15,400 Clubs in 135 countries!

At the Washington DC World Finals, ninety-six winners including Simon, from Clubs around the world will compete in semifinal rounds resulting in 10 finalists who will compete for the World Title on August 20th. The competition is the culmination of an 8-month process of qualifying rounds held worldwide. Contestants are required to deliver five – to seven minute speeches, which are judged by an International Panel on criteria including speech development, originality, effectiveness, speech value, speaker’s delivery and grammar. The contest will be available on live feed throughout the world via Toastmasters International.

A member of Dublin Toastmasters Club, Simon overcame fierce competition as he inspired, informed and entertained the audience and judges with his speech ‘Nuggets of Gold’. The speech focused on simple acts of kindness and the impact such acts can have on people’s lives. When it comes to connecting with an audience, he said, ‘the key is to share a message you feel strongly about and place that message within a story with conflicts, resolution, humor and a challenge to the audience’.

Simon Scriver successfully rose above the competition to win the District 71 Toastmasters International Speech Contest. District 71 spans across Ireland, Scotland, Northern Wales, Northern England, Midlands, and East of England Scriver has qualified to advance to the semifinal rounds of the contest. Simon is vying for one of 10 finalist spots in the 2016 World Champion of Public Speaking to be held at Toastmasters International Convention, Thursday 18th August in Washington DC.

‘Toastmasters speech contests are a fun and challenging way to build your confidence and improve as a speaker because you speak to different audiences. Because it is judged, you constantly try to improve your skills and grow as a speaker ‘ says Scriver. Simon has competed in this contests a few times, however this is the first time he will be representing his district at the International Contest. Simon works as the Head of Fundraising for the charity, One In Four: where his speaking skills are used to motivate people to donate to this very worthy cause. He joined Toastmasters 5 years ago to become a better speaker and leader both at work and in the community.

The Toastmasters International Speech Contest is the world’s largest speech contest, involving over 30,000 participants from 135 countries. It culminates with the popular World Championship of Public Speaking held annually at the organization’s International Convention.
Toastmasters has a wide range of Public Speaking and Leadership programs which run through its worldwide network of Clubs. Its members also deliver Speechcraft and leadership programs voluntarily for community groups and within prison and correctional institutions.
