The Garda Representative Association has said it believes a provision in the Garda Act which requires gardaí to account for their actions while on duty may be unconstitutional.

Jump To Comment: 1 2Good, so now we will see the guards giving an account of their movements. Seems only fair, given that they have always insisted that members of the public should account for THEIR movements.
What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
It's strange that the GRA are only questioning the constitutionality of the Act at this stage. You'd imagine that an organisation with full-time staff such as the GRA would have been examining this legislation which directly affects the members its supposed to represent as it passed through the Dáil - not after it has already been signed in to law by the President.
More importantly, it'll be interesting to see how effective and independent the Garda Inspectorate will be at investigating complaints against garda abuse of power.
