event was great,
great music on fri night.; punks with funny hair cuts playing trad (a fine rendition of that crazy tune "johnny jump up")
sat was really enjoyable, really good atmosphere without the clickeness of past events, a lot of different people felt this ; well done to all who organised, turned up, talked with new people, had a laugh, dreamed.......

great to meet heads; new and old, irish, from abroad

more audio to come with women interviewer and short interview with kids from the street, unfortunately i missed doing an interview with an old couple who turned up and who have been at rts's in the past -- it was a bit hectice, hopefuly we can catch these fine people and get both their perspectives on the event..

and on sunday a good few people came up to dolphins barn garden and had a fine day

It seems this event was twice as big as the SWP's Marxism, though in fairness they charged an entrance fee.

Just listened to the audio report there, have to agree with clare, also there are a couple of voices on it that are always "the" voice of anarchism, heard them so many times, would have been good to hear people who had just wandered in or first timers so see if they thought it was any good.

author by Joe - WSM 1st of May (personal capacity)publication date Mon Mar 06, 2006 13:16author address author phone Report this post to the editors

It was a good weekend and the Jack White branch did a good job in both the organisation and dealing with the technical problems that arose on the morning. A lot of people who were not WSM members also helped out with the kitchen crew deserving special mention.

In terms of numbers I'd guess between 400 and 500 people were in at some point over the weekend but probably no more than 150 at any one time. The largest meeting was the republicanism and anarchism one, amazingly just under 50 managed to cram into the room (which only had room for 36 chairs). The people I asked mostly thought the level of discussion at the meetings was very good.

I'd say that not only is the potential there for this to become an annual event but it could become a very big annual event. My branch should be organising it next year.

Be interesting to also hear report backs from individual stalls, workshops, meetings and the video team. It would be useful when we come to look at how we will organise things next year.

Thanks to everyone who organised the bookfair it was a great weekend.

Audio interviews above were good too but must be noted of all the 8 and a bit minutes of it not one single woman was interviewed. I was very surprised by that, there were woman attending the event, there were women heavily involved in the organising and there were plenty of women running stands and workshops.

Yikes, we have a bit of a way to go yet I think.

That should have read WSM not SWM. Obviously, its too early in the morning for me to be posting on indymedia.

author by historianpublication date Mon Mar 06, 2006 11:38author address author phone Report this post to the editors

This wasnt Irelands first anarchist bookfair. Anarchists organised a number of bookfairs, titled 'radical bookfair' in the early 90's which some members of wsm actually participated in. they were held in a few venues around temple bar including connolly hall.

author by John - ISNpublication date Mon Mar 06, 2006 10:49author address author phone Report this post to the editors

And a lesson for socialists in anti sectarianism with many non WSM groups attending. On behalf of the ISN I would like to thank the SWM organisers for our invite and their hospiltality and wish them well in future bookfairs.

I'd imagine the location of the hall probably had something to do with the turn out i mean people did'nt randomly come in off the street, but either way it was really great , fair play to all involved!!!

It wasn't the feeding of the 5000 by any stretch of the imagination but I'd say there was around 100people there on the friday night and Saturday probably had around 250 visitors between 12noon and 7pm.
