Ógra Shinn Féin Suicide Prevention Day of Action

Suicide prevention, an all Ireland approach was the message highlighted today on Wednesday 22nd March by Ógra Shinn Féin activists mobilised across Ireland for a national day of action to distribute information leaflets and raise awareness on the issue of suicide in Ireland. Ógra organised in the all the major Universities and Colleges in Ireland such as QUB, UUJ, UCG, KIT and DIT to raise awareness of the issue amongst the student population through the distribution of 20,000 leaflets through-put the country. Ógra Shinn Féin in all the major towns and cities in Ireland organised awareness raising events such as leaflet drops and banners on display to highlight this issue.

Ógra national organiser Mickey Bravender outlined “this campaign launched at the Ógra National Congress in February will be focused on the dissemination of information on the issue and the mounting of pressure for an all Ireland approach to suicide awareness. An all Ireland mental health strategy must be formulated, funded and implemented as this issue does not simply stop at the ‘border’. Suicide is the biggest killer of young people in Ireland and we as a youth movement are serious about actively campaigning on this issue.”

He continued “In the months ahead we will continue to be active on this issue with the launch of an online petition, council motions on the issue and we will continue to mount pressure on the two governments to implement an all Ireland approach to suicide prevention.”
