Hugo Chavez is really quite something, the man clocked up the largest abstention outside of Berlusconi's Italy at 75%, has a weekly TV show, & really knows how to the put the wind up them.
Them being everyone from the Pentagon, to Energy Future analysts, to those amongst his own people who are anarchists, to well ---- everyone.
News for Chavez watchers and no doubt "fans" in Ireland as to what mr Presidente! has got upto last.
___________________________________________________________________ He's decided to pull out of the Andean Community of Nations trade block. The hardest hit by this will be Colombia, but Peru will also lose trade benefits. Chavez argues that since Colombia and Peru have signed seperate trade agreements with the USA, it won't matter to them.
Colombia of course is the neighbour to Mr Chavez and the state with whom he likes to rattle sabres the most. Notably the sabres he rattles at them and those they rattle at him were supplied by Zapatero's Spain under ex-minister of Defence José Bono.
But thanks to US objections, the really small high tech parts that went into the Venezualen deliveries had to be "US free". No problem said Spain, they found arms manufacturers in Europe capable of making the same anonymous small parts, and its all about jobs.
Peru, of course is still facing a presidential run-off, after Chavez backed Humala failed to win outright the presidential election, Humala has spent the week distancing himself from his brothers and other family who staged a neo-nazi coup attempt two years ago, claiming "oh! my family are homophobic and racist, but I'm not". Chavez has also terminated co-operation with the US DEA (drug enforcement agency) quite an outfit who have the difficult task of confiscating the world's cocaine trade, this really is a difficult task, as the CIA do their best to ensure it continues.

Chavez now wants to torpedo "Mercosur" the South American free trade block
http://www.vheadline.com/readnews.asp?id=54525
grumbling that its not going to do what anyone wants, hinting on the way that too many people are about the place in new regimes now, who don't say "Hola Presidente!" enough to him, and have their own ideas on how to sort out -
Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador. - we could go on, but how many Irish people give a damn?
And last but not least -
Chavez who counts more $ dollar debt from his neighbouring South American states than they owe the IMF, has suggested that 50$ is a good price and a fair price for a barrel of oil, but he wouldn't be surprised if it reached 100$.

IMHO We would be lucky to have a man like Chavez in irish politics. A man who actually uses the country's revenues to help the poor rather than the rich, is against privatisation of the country's infrastructure and resources and notably TAKES A TOUGH LINE WITH OIL COMPANIES!!
You wouldn't see Chavez virtually giving away a gas field.
Imagine an irish taoiseach taking calls from anyone and everyone for several hours on national tv every sunday? In our dreams!
I was recently talking with someone who just came back from Venezuela. I suggest that you dont believe a lot of what you read in the media. A lot of powerful people are out to get him.
VIVA CHAVEZ
