The balloon and the needle

At least 600 US soldiers and citizens implicated in abuse of prisoners according to new studies.

And a major scandal about to happen in America as people begin to ask questions that need to be answered.

Two stories hot off the press have caught my eye this morning.

The first tells us that a study compiled by various human rights groups implicates at least 600 US soldiers and citizens in Human Rights abuses, mostly in Iraq, with numerous cases occuring in Guantanamo Bay.

The second piece starts, "The highest ranking officer yet may soon face prosecution in the prison abuse scandal, but that could raise more questions than it answers" .

The real scandal in this piece is in who isn't going to face charges.

Most of us would have a liberal knee jerk reaction against American imperialism, but stories such as the links you have provided slowly but surely cuts the legs from under any US spokesperson from sucessfully reaching for the high moral ground.

This has serious delegitimisation issues for the US government both domestically and foreign policy wise. As the US (self imposed world policing power) negotiates with the rest of the world (e.g China economics and human rights issues) their room for maneover is being severly curtailed.

This of course is a good thing. It can not happen fast enough.

Are we seeing the fall of American imperial/economic power?

Or will the US recover as it did from the vietnam war.
