Don Quichotte Magazine and Drawing the world together … with a smile

At times of cultural divisions reading cartoon websites and cartoon magazines from all the different part of the planet, help to better understand each other. The blasphemous cartoons brought a lot of troubles but most of the time cartoons are the most direct and easy way to communicate, understand and appreciate the humour culture and tradition of societies and regions far away from our one.

Don Quichotte Magazine and Drawing the world together … with a smile
At times of cultural divisions, theese are our times, lack of knowledge in foreign languages and difficulties in learning new ones have only the effect to increase the misunderstanding amongst the different parts of the planet.
It is at this precise time that the art of cartoons comes to our help.
Under the motto “Drawing the world together” FECO, the World Federation of Cartoonists (www.fecoweb.org/), has always encouraged cartoonists to use all their drawing skills to reduce the gap amongst the different cultures. Probably not everybody at Indymedia is aware that our days the web has a proliferation of FECO cartoons sites, flourishing in the most remote regions of the world, busy in organizing international cartoon contests and festivals to which thousands of cartoonists expressing their most original points of view on our everyday life.

One of those is Don Quichotte.

Founded by renown Turkish cartoonist Erdogan Karayel, Don Quichotte is a cartoon website and magazine promoting arts, peace and most of all humor. Initially born to give a voice to the Turkish community in Germany (where the magazine is based) the magazine has gradually become a more international one.
The principal feature with Don Quichotte is that its readers can participate to the project by sending their own illustrations and cartoons. Cartoonists-readers are asked either to send cartons on specific topics like the The Bird Flue, The German World Cup, The Lebanon War, to name only some recent ones, or just to send their works spontaneously.

Cartoons are published on-Line and the selected ones will feature on the pages of the monthly paper magazine, with a chance to being also exhibited at international venues.
Amongst the regular professional cartoonists featuring on Don Quichotte are American David Baldinger, Brasilian Ares, Argentine Ana Von Rebeur, Iranian Rahim Baggal Asgari, Turkish Kamil Yavuz and Ukrainan Julia Lishchenko.
Another prominent guest of Don Quichotte is Brazilian cartoonist Carlos Latuff, whose life was recently threatened by the Likud party angry at the sight of Carlos anti-Zionist cartoons on Israeli cartoon websites. Another young high talented cartoonist featuring regularly on Don Quichotte is 23 year old Belgium Benjamin Heine whose appreciation for his anti-war works must certainly come from the most different cultures when we think that his anti-war cartoons have being published on some of the most popular cartoon-websites of the Middle and Far East World like Irancartoon.com, Syriacartoon.com, the website of the Azerbaijan Cartoon Association as well as on the largely popular Chinese Okcomic.

I think every cartoonists and cartoons lovers leaving in Ireland will highly enjoy the spicy humor of Don Quichotte.
Reading international cartoons and interacting with cartoonists from all around the world is the best opportunity to start to know the jokes, humor and cultures of people leaving in different regions and countries. An opportunity that comes without the need to speak one single word of any foreign language.

For this I would really encourage all the people of Indymedia to tune to www.donquichotte.at and take part to the project of drawing the world together.

Ciao Mario with a smile!!!
