A roundup of the death toll in Iraq over the last week.

The least become the most and the most become the least.
What's in a name?

At least 250 SUSPECTED insurgents were killed on Sunday in Southern Iraq close to the holy city of Najaf.

The Iraqi army, backed by US helicopters, battled and shelled the suspects for most of the day, in what were once picturesque date palm orchards. 40 prisoners were taken. One US helicopter ‘crashed’ during the onslaught and two US personnel were killed.

Thousands of Shiite pilgrims are currently travelling to Najaf to commemorate the death of Mohammed’s grandson there in the 7th century.

The Iraqi army says that they have prevented the whole of the city of Najaf from being destroyed, they say that the suspected insurgents intended to attack the city and slaughter pilgrims and destroy the holy shrine of Imam Ali.

It’s been a particularly brutal week in Iraq. The US said on Saturday that 7 of its soldiers were killed. Three of the soldiers were killed when a bomb exploded near a Humvee. Two more were killed in separate bombing incidents in northeastern Bagdad on Friday. Another two were killed on Thursday in another bombing incident that targeted their combat patrol, this was in eastern Bagdad. As per usual, details of the hundreds of Iraqi civilians killed and maimed are sketchy and unimportant, but on Saturday alone some sixty people were killed or found dead across Iraq.

Meanwhile back in the good ole US of A, tens of thousands of supporters turned up for an anti-war protest in Washington, as G. W. Bush’s democracy becomes more patently obviously a dictatorship. Even Jane Fonda made an appearance, her first in more than three decades. She made comparisons between the current wars and Vietnam. Susan Sarandon, Danny Glover and Sean Penn turned up too, to name but a few.

Shannon Airport is still a major hub in the war effort against humanity. Our government cares not and continues to offer platitudes and meaningless excuses.

There will be a major event organised for Shannon this March, let’s make it one to remember.

Hillary Clinton, on Saturday night, changed her opinion on the Iraq issue. This should nudge her even further ahead in the race to be the next Chief Executive.
