For the tenth time since 1978 the Guardia Civil barracks at Durango, Bilbo/Bilbao has been attacked by ETA. This morning's carbomb is reported as having held approximately 70kg of explosives and shrapnel. 2 members of the Guardia Civil have resulted injured. At present there has been no confirmation from the terrorist organisation that they are responsible for the attack, but it is widely felt that this is their first succesful action since calling off their permenant ceasefire of March 2006 last June. coverage from Basque TV in English language which it may be supposed will be extended through the day. |

Jump To Comment: 1I'm going to try to get as much into this little comment as possible and thus as usual annoy people on everyside. Yesterday saw Bilbao celebrate one of its anual holidays. Since the last municipal elections which saw a member of ANV become mayoress of that city, a debate has opened (not for the first time) on the presence of the Spanish flag on the balcony of the city council. The decision was taken to no longer fly that flag, but yesterday at 8am the flag was flown together with the Basque flag, EU flag and flag of the city of Bilbo/Bilboa for a whopping twenty minutes. That came just over 4 hours after a carbomb woke lots of people up and injured 2 guardia civil officers & scared the parents of five kids who were sleeping in that barracks. Later on at mid-day all political parties of the Spanish state and the Basque with the exception of ANV had condemned the terrorist attack. In the evening a number of people in the low thousands or high hundreds marched behind an ANV banner to demand auto-determination and with the slogan "the future is in our hands". Meanwhile across the border the President of France Sarkozy marked his passing of 100 days in office with a visit to the French basque but at first declined to comment on the bombing. He was met by a small contingent of Batasuna (who are not illegal in France) supporters numbering in the few dozens who called on him to recognise Basque autonomy. By late evening Sarkozy had been shown evidence of a flat French police reported as belonging to ETA in front of journalists & made his comment that no terrorism would be tolerated in the French state. By which stage the vice-President of the Spanish government had warned that all in ETA and those who harbour them are going to jail, sooner or later. By late night fall police data had reported that the first carbomb since the ceasefire had ended had used a timer system & indicated a return to 1980's techniques.
I dno't really think there's anything more to add. Except this - a compilation of the clips of the last year from the Catalan Satirical program "Polonia" (a play on the castillian nickname for catalans which is poles) which have included takes or skits on the Basque independence movement. Those skits ended in mid May as it happens. As it happened. So much happens. So much has happened. It happens all the time. Even if you don't understand the language look at the compilation - it's visual enough & covered the period from late January to mid May.
