Mark Zuckerberg's repudiation of Covid-era censorship is welcome. But it's not enough, say Josh Stylman and Jeffrey Tucker. Without a public reckoning they will just do it all again when a cause seems urgent enough.

One Year on In Oaxaca

category international | anti-capitalism | other press author Wednesday October 03, 2007 11:11author by C Murray Report this post to the editors

Political and Social Changes

On the Third of October 2006 there was a alert here and on the IMC Networks that there
was going to be a suppression and violent putdown of the APPO and the Popular movement
in Oaxaca. Narconews had been sending out alerts since the 30th of September, reporting
troop gathering of up to 5,000 men and reporting that only one radio station was working.

Still going a year on.
Still going a year on.

Since that time there have been three sites working flat out reporting the issue and keeping it
on the agenda, these were:-

http://chiapas.indymedia.org
http://mexico.indymedia.org/oaxaca
http://nyc.indymedia.org/en/index.html

During the first two months of the PRI attacks there were reported 95 disappearances,
99 deaths and use of rape against the women activists. The dissappearances were reported
widely on the net throught the Reporters Without Borders Site, the Isiswomen Site and
Amnesty International. The dissappeared included web editors, web designers and APPO
activists. The dead included APPO and an Independent Media Journalist, Activist and Film-maker;
Brad Will. There was very little coverage in the commercial press with the Guardian reporting
sometimes and no named persons reported as missing or dead.

The Megamarch was attacked and solidarity actions globally for Brad Will were held.
The activists used a variety of methods to create change and Radio Universidad acted
as a focal point for the people, it was attacked on numerous occasions by federal forces.

During the last twelve months there have been many changes and violences
but the issue of the repression at Oaxaca has created big changes in collectivism that
has dominated CIM and there are connections working globally on creating change for
ordinary people through organisations such as IFEX and AMARC and Indymedia.
There are still problems, the Family of Brad Will have called for the impeachment of
Governor Ulises Ruis and Congress is refusing to answer questions or initiate enquiry
into the murder of Will and APPO members.

Pres Calderon has ignored the repression of Oaxaca and is involved in bi-lateral agreements
with George Bush and the US/Mexican border Wall.

The International freedom of Expression Exchange is working with Oaxaca Activists to
get constitutional change to communications law, this is a global movement:-
