Mark Zuckerberg's repudiation of Covid-era censorship is welcome. But it's not enough, say Josh Stylman and Jeffrey Tucker. Without a public reckoning they will just do it all again when a cause seems urgent enough.

The great excuse for everything: China

category international | anti-capitalism | other press author Wednesday October 10, 2007 09:21author by Miriam Report this post to the editors

Don't blame us

The west does everything badly because if it doesn't, China will do it for us instead. Low wages, environmental degradation - you name it - it's all the fault of the Chinese.

George Monbiot demolishes western capitalism's explanation for why nothing can be done well.

More jockeying for position in world markets but in contrast to the US dominated 'west' the South-South scenario - without any reliance on the terorist smash and grab tactics of NATO/UN/US/UK - looks a whole lot more civilised:

I am tired of these relentless media -bite analyses of the mainstream. for 'civilised' read
'bourgeois'.

You appear to be confusing two different threads. The title of the other thread is an adaptation of a comment made to us by Chomsky who described the contrast between the Iranian academic's response and Bollinger's address as 'the difference between civilisation and barbaraism'. He was referring to their willingness to set about rational discussion of the known facts as compared to the foaming at the mouth Bollinger resorted to. Unlike many, Chomsky is able to seprate out what is good and bad in a given situation - whoever or whatever he is talking about. He could hardly be described as an apologist for any of the greed and oppression which the word 'civilised' is frequently used to disguise, and is applying it in its true sense in this instance.
