Interview with local resident John Monaghan
7 Days to Go ...hope to see ya there
As momentum builds in the growing popular pro-active resistance to the constuction of Shell's on-shore refinery, against the expressed desire of the local community. John Monaghan explian the importance of the coming weekend, its connections with the struggle of the Ogoni population in Nigeria. He also looks at the hollow rhetoric of democracy, law and order as experienced by the local community in West mayo, increasingly harrassed by the state through it violent arm of the guards.
This weekend is a weekend of anniversary, both that of the state judicial murder of Ogoni campigners in Nigeria (see http://www.indymedia.ie/article/84837 ) as well as the year anniversary of the state-sponsored battering of the rossport community and activists by our very own cops!!!
Much maligned these days, these macho thugs with batons are the real source of violence and tension in the area. They have much more in common with the hired hands of capitalism around the world that currently paid to supress the anger of local communities everywhere. 'Power over' (be it of corporations or corrupt governments)is never given away and alwaysfights to remain, but the 'power to' that is steadily growing, both locally and nationally, will continue to challenge, disrupt and dismantle both the lies, spin and violence of the state and Shell and the project itself that is at the core of this ongoing injustice

Come to Erris & see what the Corrib Gas debate is really about - the environment & surroundings of the Glengad SAC & a much wider area are threatened by a polluting, unsafe development.
