Foreign Secretary David Lammy set out "the future of the U.K.'s foreign policy" this week. It's an abysmal vision, says Dr. David McGrogan, but it gives hope that the edifice of 'progressive realism' will soon collapse.

"Threads" (1984)

category international | anti-war / imperialism | opinion/analysis author Monday January 07, 2008 15:26author by Weary Report this post to the editors

One of the most terrifying films ever made shows the insanity of nuclear war

"Threads" a BBC docudrama from 1984 focuses on the impact of a full blown nuclear war on the residents of Shefield in the 1980's.
The U.S. and Russia come to blows after a military coup in Iran prompts a Soviet military incursion which provokes an American military response.
The conflict escalates into a full-blown nuclear war which decimates humanity and population of Britain.
Shefield recieves a direct hit which transforms the city into a wasteland.

This is the full length uncut version.

I must warn you that this film is relentlessly bleak and deeply disturbing.

Today there are thousands upon thousands of nuclear weapons not only in the hands of the U.S and Russia but a number of emerging regional superpowers.

What might happen if political instability in Pakistan led to US intervention?
What might happen if the US invaded Iran and provoked Russian interference?

Although this film is quite dated and the political world has changed radically we must never forget that while these hideous weapons of mass death continue to exist that humanity will remain in peril.

The living will envy the dead.
