Mark Zuckerberg's repudiation of Covid-era censorship is welcome. But it's not enough, say Josh Stylman and Jeffrey Tucker. Without a public reckoning they will just do it all again when a cause seems urgent enough.

Abortion issues in Nicaragua post- Ortega election

Isis women today reports on the issue of abortion rights in Nicaragua.

In the run-up to the 2006 poll in Nicaragua, Ortega had agreed as part of
his presidential bid to sign onto the outlawing of all abortion, which included
therapeutic abortion and abortion in the case of ectopic pregnancy.

9 women's rights activists have been arrested for criminal violations in relation to the
case of Rosita , a nine year old who obtained a legal abortion. The man who raped the
child is not facing charges.

Ana Maria Pizarro . Regional Coordination campaign for the de -criminalisation of abortion.
Juanita Jimenez advocate against violence.
Lorna Norori , Pscyhologist.
Luisa Molina Arguello , chairman of the NGO's working with children and adolescents.
Martha Maria Blandon, sexuality, maternity and rights forum and IPAS , Central America.
Martha Munguia .Centre Mujeres Accion, ya.
Mayra Sirias. Network of women against violence.
Violeta Delgado . former executive officer Network of Women against Violence.
Yamileth Mejia.

I will add in the links and repeat what I wrote at the top of the page.

Daniel ortega ran on an anti-abortion ticket in Nicaragua.
The last legal abortion in Nicaragua was performed on a nine year old rape victim.
The women who fought for her rights and work with sex abuse victims are
subject to criminal charge.
The man who raped a child has walked away.

The isis women site has copies of a solidarity letter. The details of the charges against
the woman are also outlined.

The Criminalisation of abortion practice in Nicaragua was co-sponsored by the
RC church and the ANDPH (Nicaragua's National Association for Human Rights)

The ANDPH interfered in the electoral processes of Nicaragua, stole the human rights
of women and child victims of rape ;and it is alleged that they facilitated the man who
committed the crime to escape.

This is because it is cheaper and more convenient to humiliate and sexually abuse
women and girls than it is to ensure that their rights to knowledge and safety are upheld.
Whilst the nine activists face charges, the man will not face charges and has left the
country.

'Women who become pregnant after being raped, or whose lives are endangered by
their pregnancy, are banned from having abortions in Nicaragua. This country refuses
to take into account a woman's age or her ability to care for a child and will prosecute
any woman who has an abortion. 'This new law intentionally denies women access to
health services essential to saving their lives, and is thus inconsistent with Nicaragua's
obligations under International Human Rights Law'

82 women have died since the interference in the electoral processes of Nicaragua
by a RC/Episcopal cabal.

This statement was released, the 13th of December 2007, [forwarded to me today].
The case of the nine women has been dominating Latino blogs and NGO's but
wholly ignored by mainstream media- since Autumn 2007, when the illegalisation
of all abortion was re-iterated by the Ortega government. Since that time up to
ninety women and girls have died as a result of inability to access services, and from
medical practioners who have not been able to aid them for fear of thirty year prison
sentences. The Law to outlaw all abortion was promised by Ortega as part of his
pre-election campaign and is in contravention of human rights legislation.

'As women Nobel Laureates , we express our deepest solidarity with the nine women's
rights activists wh have been accused of criminal acts and threatened with prison sentences
by the Nicaraguan Government for their important work in defense of Women's
Reproductive rights and in defence of victims of rape and sexual violence. We are gravely concerned
by this attempt to silence the critical voices for democracy and peace of leaders of the
Nicaraguan women's movement as they bring to light the most egregious 'private' crimes
of incest, rape and sexual abuse that implicate key leaders in government'

Nine are facing charges of crimes of omission in relation to the Rosita case.

Three close associates of the group have been murdered in domestic violence incidents.

Solidarity to the women who have suffered incredibly to bring to light the abuse of children
and women in a country dominated by corruption and shamefully led by ex-sandinista
daniel ortega.
