Inaki de Juana "may be extradited" - decision Belfast court

category international | crime and justice | other press author Tuesday March 10, 2009 16:49author by ruari bear starts a feud Report this post to the editors

Today the Belfast magistrate covering the request for an extradition order on high-profile ETA member and sometime hunger striker Iņaki De Juana Chaos concurred, after four months consideration, that the slogan read out in his name at a rally of supporters on his release from prison constituted an incitement to terrorist action & real continuity in the ongoing spiral of violence which mars all hope of the Basque people to enjoy increased autonomy, independence or their own seat at the United Nations

In answer to the decision to open the door for consideration of the request, counsel for De Juana has announced their case will be built around "the media attention given the case and low probability that De Juana would get a fair trail" as well as other techincalities..

As is customary at such times we will read about struggles every which place and see a photo of Inaki in a bawneen jumper.

It's ridiculous that someone could get 3 years in prison for:
1.-a letter he denies he wrote.
2.-a letter the police say they don't have it (no evidence of offence)
3.-a letter which allegedly is a whole sheet long and they just pay attention at two words.
4.- those words are a Basque language saying used on every day conversation by people of all backgrounds and ideologies.
5.- two words: aurrera bolie which can be translated as onwards the ball normally means keep on, continue and in a political context keep on with the struggle for independence and socialism which takes many different forms and mostly not the armed struggle.

Nobody in Ireland has ever been convicted for anything like that. Ridiculous.

Ridiculous what they're doing to Inaki de Juana? Not from the point of the Spanish judiciary, who want to stamp out any Basque resistance to its rule. Not to the Spanish right who, with their press, manipulate many of the Spanish 'socialist' Government's actions.

De Juana was previously given 12 years while being held illegally (i.e. after his sentence had concluded in full) which was later reduced to three, for the alleged crime of glorifying terrorism in two articles which were very critical of Spanish rule but which did not in any way glorify armed resistance or "terrorism".

Of course he won't get a fair trial -- people much lower on the Spanish Right's hate list don't get a fair trial so why would he? This persecution should stop.
