Linking the Local and the Global: Using Development Education in the Community

category laois | education | event notice author Tuesday February 23, 2010 12:55author by RachelLYCS - Lourdes Youth & Community Services Report this post to the editors

A free 2-day training workshop for those involved in the community sector. Portarlington, 22/23 March 2010.

Spend two days in Co. Laois in March learning how to relate important global themes with the issues you are dealing with on the ground here on Ireland. Empower your participants to understand how the world works and to stake a stance!

Course Content:
Development Education is about linking the local to the global, and empowering people to become active players in our increasingly globalised world. It can touch on many development issues affecting Ireland and other countries such as housing to health, racism to fair trade, debt to climate change. In this training course, we will explore what is going on in our local communities and how these issues link to the wider world. We will examine why this local/global analysis is important and useful and we will demonstrate a range of activities and methodologies. There will be special inputs on doing development education with particular groups in the community. These will be delivered by guest facilitators Anne Garvey (on working with Travellers), Mbemba Jabbi from the Africa Centre (on involving migrant communities) and Adrienne Boyle (on working with Older people) You will come away with practical tools for exploring local/global issues in your communities and as well as taking home a copy of our resources, Connecting Communities. You will also know where to go for further support and resources for this work.

Dates:
Monday 22 March & Tuesday 23 March 2010
(Attendance on both days essential)

Venue:
Mount St Anne's Conference Centre, Killenard, Portarlington, Co. Portlaoise

Booking:
This workshop is open to anyone with an active involvement in the community sector and interest in bringing development education to community settings. There is no charge and overnight accommodation and meals are provided. For an application form please contact Rachel in LYCS on 01-8230860 or email racheldempsey@lycs.ie. Application forms must be received by Friday 12 March.

Who is organising the training?
The workshop will be facilitated by Rachel Dempsey and Helena McNeil, development education workers in Lourdes Youth and Community Services (LYCS), a community development project in Dublin’s North East inner city. LYCS has a 25 year history of carrying out development education within this organisation and with the local community. Having found development education hugely beneficial in contributing to community development, LYCS now aims to empower other community organisations to bring a global perspective to their work. LYCS does this by providing training and mentoring services and has also published Connecting Communities, a practical guide to using development education in community settings. This training event is fully funded by Irish Aid
