Pro-Palestine Activist Makes Citizen’s Arrest on Tony Blair in Eason’s as over 1,000 protest outside

Brave girl but did she have to actually buy it?

On Saturday 4th September Kate O’Sullivan, an activist from the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC), made a citizen’s arrest on former British Prime Minister Tony Blair at a book signing in Eason’s. However the Gardaí refused to act on the arrest, preferring instead to detain Ms. O’Sullivan for half an hour in a stairwell. At the protest outside Eason’s, where over 1,000 people gathered to protest the presence of Mr Blair in Ireland, at least three arrests of peaceful protesters where carried out, including that of a secondary school student. All have subsequently been released and are due in court on 30th September.

Kate O’Sullivan, the Cork woman who made the citizen’s arrest, after her release said: “After I went through airport-like security to get to Mr Blair, I told him I was there to make a citizen’s arrest on him for war crimes committed in Iraq. Mr Blair looked down and I was immediately grabbed by five security men and dragged away. As I was being dragged I cried out that there is half a million people dead in Iraq, that he had broken the Fourth Geneva Convention and that he was a war criminal. Mr Blair refused to even look at me. After that I was detained for about half an hour in a stairwell without being charged with anything. I believe that all war criminals that come to this country should be prosecuted under Universal Jurisdiction, and if the police are unwilling to act then it is up to ordinary people to make citizen’s arrests”

Speaking at the demonstration outside Eason’s, IPSC National Chairperson Freda Hughes said: “The IPSC supported today’s demonstration because we believe that Mr Blair, a war criminal, is unfit to hold the role of the Quartet’s Middle East Envoy. The idea that this man, who claims that ‘when it comes to security, I am 100% on Israel’s side”, could be an impartial peace-broker is absurd. Mr. Blair is also on record as recently saying the Apartheid state of Israel is “a remarkable example for the rest of us”, a shocking statement to make in light of the tentative peace talks which began last week. If negotiations have taught us anything, it is that there is a time to stand your ground and a time to walk away. Now is clearly the time for Mr Blair to walk away and allow genuine voices of solidarity to be heard.”

WELL DONE FOLKS KEEP UP THE FIGHT AGAINST EVIL REGARDLESS.
Our government speaks out of both sides of its mouth and every other orifice because they are out of the same mould as Blair and Israel.

"tony blair is not an evil man,(although his comments on israel are way out of line)just a very misguided one, maybe that has a lot to do with his stout christian beleifs.."

Sure as an individual he is a charming charlie, does not escape the objective facts that he profits from misery:

- His unpaid but expenses-rich role as the West's "peace envoy" in the Middle East, Blair is, in effect, a voice of Israel, which awarded him a $1 million "peace prize." In other words, his wealth has grown rapidly since he launched, with George W. Bush, the bloodbath in Iraq. Since stepping down as prime minister in 2007, he has accumulated an estimated £20 million, much of it as a result of his ties with the Bush administration.

- Documents released by the High Court show that Blair allowed British citizens to be abducted and tortured

- Blair conspired in and executed an unprovoked war of aggression against a defenseless country, which the Nuremberg judges in 1946 described as the "paramount war crime."

- Over one million butchered

- Four million Iraqis have been forced to flee their homes and a majority of children have descended into malnutrition and trauma.

- Cancer rates near the cities of Fallujah, Najaf, and Basra (the latter "liberated" by the British) are now revealed as higher than those at Hiroshima. "UK forces used about 1.9 metric tons of depleted uranium ammunition in the Iraq war in 2003," the Defense Secretary Liam Fox told parliament on 22 July.

Well done to all. The British media are covering this quite alot so its making quite and impact here and big congrats to Kate as well. Going out on her own takes bravery and guts.

Couldn't help but flinch to see Rich BB in the Anti-war movement bib though. Was the March predominantly SWP or was it multi-group led? It would be great to see anti-war reinvogorated by different groups in dialogue rather than some of the old imposed leadership.

It is a disgrace that shops had to close down and lose business and the whole of O'Connell St blocked off to entertain a war criminal.

It was also a disgrace to witness members of An Garda Síochána laughing sneering at all members of the protest group who quite rightly spoke out against Blair, and to see other soul-less motherfuckers in the SDU (who I hate just as much as Blair) pointing out decent Irish people in the crowd who were protesting - when they were protecting a fucking war criminal behind them!

I can see the point of the protest ,but my biggest problem is understanding why now, when he is out of government, this does not have the media impact it could have(although it did get the message across),such as a cake throwing while he was in the political chair?he had many other visit to our emerald isle before now, such as the when he was building peace relations in the north of ireland?

We need to establish how much the state (ie you and me) will have to fork out to cover the cost of butcher blair's visit. the gardai, the gardai snipers, the compensation to the Luas etc. a scandal.

as for richard b b in his anti-war bib: it brings out his babyface features, dont u think?
time people stopped squabbling and got active on peace matters. there are other peace groups active around the country, Shannon watch, Derry and of course the people who highlighted the Blair visit on indymedia the Galway Alliance Against War. Why not set up a peace group in your community and get burrowing.

Gardaí are subject to the same rule of law as other citizens.

Their actions must be deemed to fall within the concept of “minimum force”.

All actions carried out by gardaí must be justifiable, preventative and satisfy stringent legal requirements.

Gardaí may use batons to strike protesters who threaten the safety of gardaí, other protesters or bystanders.

Gardaí may also use force to prevent damage to property or to disperse crowds where safety is an issue.

Will the Garda Ombudsman Office ask about this? What do you think?

Of course The Garda Ombudsmans office will ask about this , that is the reason they are in place, ( to ask questions )

However it doe's not mean that anything positive will be done about it ,( as in to satisfy our collective guilty expectations )

It simply means what it says , ''mind your own business , this is in the interest of national security '' , so eff off ]

I was at the protest and I was infuriated by the way the anti-war protestors were treated by the gardaí and the SDU. As I looked around, I saw many decent individuals who have been on these protests for many years getting battered and that really pissed me off. The fact that I saw some members of An Garda Síochána laughing and sniggering at committed and well respected decent anti-war activists who spoke out really angered me, and the SDU pointing out decent Irish protestors in the crowd made by blood boil, whilst they protected a man responsible for the deaths of countless numbers of people.

The fact that there were stupid Irish people queuing to get his book really pissed me off as well!

In saying all that, I wish to apologise for the extremely offensive language I used earlier to describe members of the SDU, whilst I hate the underhand, extremely unpatriotic, and often times murderous tactics of this group, the words I used to describe them were extremely offensive and meaningless and totally out of character for me (I have been under a lot of stress lately and there has been too many negative events recently that have really angered me). I apologise wholeheartedly for using such unnecessary and offensive language.

I should also clarify that I hate the decision Blair made to go to war and I do believe that this bad decision makes him a 'war criminal' and no better than Sadam Hussein.

I would recommend that Blair's book be moved to the 'Crime' section in Easons, it would do better there!
