Joe Higgins launching Socialist Party’s Limerick election challenge

category limerick | politics / elections | event notice author Sunday October 31, 2010 16:06author by Limerick Socialist Partyauthor email limericksocialist at gmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Joe Higgins will be speaking in Limerick on Tuesday November 2nd at 7.45pm in Pery's Hotel (Glentworth Street) at a public rally launching the Socialist Party's election challenge in the city. The rally, on "Fighting the Cuts & Building the Alternative" will also be addressed by Cian Prendiville, the Socialist Party's first ever Dáil candidate in Limerick.
Fight the Cuts & Build the Alternative
Fight the Cuts & Build the Alternative

Explaining why he is standing, Cian Prendiville said "This government has got to go. They are bankrupting the country with their bank bailouts and trying to make ordinary people pay with a savage four year austerity plan, but the official opposition of Fine Gael and Labour are offering no real change in policy. They have all signed up to the same four year plan of cuts. Unfortunately, even Sinn Féin have agreed to the plan, albeit wanting to spread the cuts out over six years.

"What is clear, however, is that taking €15 billion out of the economy by slashing jobs and services and imposing new taxes on ordinary workers will only do one thing – reduce demand and make the economy and unemployment much worse.

"In Limerick this will impact particularly severely where unemployment, particularly youth unemployment with two out of every three young men out of work in the city, is already a critical issue that needs to be tackled. As a young and unemployed person, I will make a stand on this issue and demand that we let the bankers, bondholders and developers who are responsible for the economic crash take their losses and, instead, use those vast sums to invest in essential services, infrastructure and job creation."

We would encourage all those who live in and around Limerick and want to see a real fight back built to come to the rally and find out about the alternative and how you can get involved in building the fight back. If you can't make it but would like to help out, then email Cian at cian@socialistparty.net.

How unkind of people to ignore this gentleman Joe Higgins , Last Thursday evening i was
standing outside The Green Shopping Centre when Joe came by with his briefcase in his
hand ,walking home from work , how many T.D.s have taken on this new way of travelling i
would like to know , my point being Joe is no hypocrite unlike the fat arsed other T.Ds who
seemingly prefer to don their uniform of metal while totting up the mileage allowances , paid
for by we the tax payers.............

And some of the electorate would like a change, well here'san example of what change should
look like .

Joe was the only person to hold Ahern to account as illustrated by how angry he got every time Joe spoke. The best guy we ever had in the Dail. I hope he is in there again soon. Most of the rest of them are a waste of space and taxpayers money but I'd be happy for my tax to go towards Joe's salary because I know he would actually be good value for money and would fight tooth and nail for a better society for us all. Great guy!.

I think the SP and other left groups should make it clear on their election material if they are going to be standing independently or as part of the new left unity grouping . It would be good to get a report of the Limerick meeting to hear if anything was said about that new development . I haven’t seen anything about the left unity project since the PB4P leak on indymedia.

BTW . It's a sign of an upcoming election when you start to see prospective TDs councillors etc sitting or walking around in public places in the constituencies where they hope to get elected. A good place to spot them is in open plan cafes within shopping malls . In the run-up to an election ,as you go into Tescos or Dunnes Stores to buy your weekend shopping , you will start to see familiar faces drinking cups of coffee with partners and family . Completely coincidental of course. Just like you they have to do their weekly shopping with their family . Just like you they sometimes like to sit down and relax with the family for a cup of coffee.

The left unity talks were briefly mentioned as was the hope it would lead to further possible developments of a broad left party.
