REPUBLICAN NETWORK for UNITY Chairperson/Cathaoirleach, DANNY MCBREARTY expresses solidarity with Irish Political Prisoners and their families in the run-up to Christmas.
Mr. McBrearty said; “December has historically helped focus the minds of our people on those incarcerated as a result of the conflict. For centuries, the Irish people have rightly resisted British occupation and imperialism. Consequently, tens of thousands have been incarcerated in Irish, British, European, American and Australian prisons.
Whenever Britain tried to label captured Republicans as criminal they protested. For Irish Political Prisoners captivity was another chapter in the struggle. Between 1920 and 1981 twenty-two POWs’ tragically died on various Hunger-Strikes campaigning for political status. Earlier this year, over 30 prisoners withstood a modern attempt to criminalise them in Maghaberry Gaol. The Republican Network for Unity commends their collective courage in continuing the long history of resistance”.
Mr. McBrearty concluded; “At present there are over eighty Republican Prisoners. RNU believe that while Britain continues to usurp our national sovereignty there will be Irish Political Prisoners. We urge you to make a donation, send a card and/or hold a picket in your area to demonstrate your solidarity”.
