Emergency Motion passed at SDCC Meeting to support School students.

category national | education | press release author Monday December 20, 2010 20:12author by Cllr Gino Kenny - PBPA Report this post to the editors

Emergency Motion passed last Monday at South Dublin County Council meeting in support of students of Colaiste Brid and Moyle Park.

Press Release. 20 December 2010.

Emergency Motion passed last week at the South Dublin County Council meeting in support of students of Colaiste Brid and Moyle Park.

At last week's South Dublin County Council meeting Councillor Gino Kenny of the PBPA tabled a motion to support the stance taken by students of Colaiste Brid and Moyle Park College. Some students of both schools staged a walk out in protest to the cutbacks in education and the registration fees that that will rise for students next term. The motion was passed by Councillors of the Labour Party, Sinn Fein, Independent Councillor Gus O Connell and People Before Profit Councillor Gino Kenny. Speaking after the vote Cllr Kenny said” I’m delighted that the motion was passed. I think it’s important that school students know that they have our support when it comes to standing up for their rights and their fellow students rights. Students in Ireland, Britain and Europe are rebelling not just against cuts to education, but they are widening out their demands for a more just society.1968 was a year that is etched in everybody’s minds, when students and Workers became together to fight one cause. Students are the future”

A student from Moyle Park College who has been threatened with expulsion from the school has yet to hear from the board of Management . The board as yet hasn't taken any action against the student.

MOTION.

We the undersigned support the stance taken by the students of Colaiste Brid and Moyle Park in relation to educational cuts that will have a direct impact on all students in Ireland. We view with concern reports that any student could be facing expulsion from school for such actions. We as Councillors appeal to any board of management not to punish any student in standing up for his or her fellow student’s educational future
