Wellbeing Forum: Treating Addiction

category dublin | miscellaneous | event notice author Thursday February 17, 2011 14:16author by Basil Miller - The Wellbeing Foundationauthor email wellbeing at wellbeingfoundation dot comauthor address 2 Eden Park | Glasthule | Dun Laoghaire | Co Dublinauthor phone 01 4433494 Report this post to the editors

Treating Addiction

This forum, Treating Addiction, will be introduced by Colin O’Driscoll, Chief Psychologist and treatment director of Forest Healthcare, which specialises in treating addictions and substance abuse
http://www.forest.ie/

Colin O’Driscoll's introductory talk will involve an overview of the various treatment models of addiction. He will then analyse the process of addiction, examining, without academic distraction, why it takes place, why it is so widespread, why it is so destructive, and why traditional treatment of this problem demonstrates such poor outcomes.

He will follow with a review of what is and is not effective in the treatment of these problems, also providing information on how to talk to people who suffer with problems relating to addiction.

There will be plenty of time for discussion and questions.

********************

The Wellbeing Forums take place twice monthly, on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. In a new format, they replace the former Depression Dialogues and Psychosis Dialogues presented by the Wellbeing Foundation.

The intention of these gatherings is to offer an opportunity for those in emotional or mental distress to share views and experiences, to explore the meaning of wellbeing in its fullest sense, to learn about a variety of healing options outside the drug-based biomedical model, and enjoy the support of a community of like-minded fellow travellers along the path towards wellness.

The forums are usually facilitated by Dr Aine Tubridy. Each meeting explores a different topic of mental health or general wellbeing, begining with a short overview of the topic, demystifying it in terms of medical or psychiatric labelling, offering frameworks to explain symptoms, discussing the range of therapies available, and teaching some basic skills which help. Then a dialogue follows in which people ask questions, raise issues about medication or different therapies, share their experience (if they wish), and listen to what’s helped others.

The venue is the Institute of Psychosocial Medicine, 2 Eden Park, Glasthule. Time is 7.15 to 9.15pm. Donation €5 or more.

The Depression Dialogues monthly meetings, later joined by the Psychosis Dialogues meetings, were begun by Dr Michael Corry and Dr Aine Tubridy in 2004 and led to the setting up of the Wellbeing Foundation.
