Surprise new candidate for West Belfast

category antrim | politics / elections | press release author Monday April 11, 2011 19:58author by JM Report this post to the editors

A surprise new candidate for the West Belfast constituency has been announced.

Brian Pelan is standing as an independent candidate but firmly within the Connolly socialist tradition, raising the slogan of a Workers Republic. Although a new name to most electors Brian Pelan has been around a long time with his last foray into electoral politics being election agent for successful Belfast City councillor John McAnulty during the hunger strike. Brian is hoping that the radical socialist tradition that burned brightly in the past will kindle a new flame of resistance to the four billion pounds of cuts that all the mainstream parties are hiding during the election.

Brian said “Peter Robinson has said that this is the first everyday election in the North. Well, in everyday elections politicians don’t tell the truth. An examination of the statements of all the main parties shows that they are all hiding the reality of the huge cuts that they have planned for us all after the vote. What people need most now is an opposition and that is what I am standing to give.”
