Speaking following the government announcement today that it intends to bring forward legislation and regulations on abortion, a broad range of pro-choice groups welcomed the call but said that the government must give commitments on the dates by which this will happen. The groups, which include Irish Choice Network, Choice Ireland, Action on X, Galway Pro-Choice, Cork Women’s Right to Choose and Doctors for Choice said that furthermore this legislation should only be considered a first step towards liberalising abortion laws in Ireland which must include holding a referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment to the Constitution. ... read full story / add a comment

Aurora is a 32-year old Costa Rican woman. She has a job that she likes, a good relationship, after months of trying, she is finally pregnant. However, at 8 weeks, the doctors informed her that the fetus has multiple severe malformations that would not allow it to survive outside the uterus, including severe scoliosis, decreased level of amniotic fluid, and a complete absence of abdominal wall which leaves the internal organs such as the liver and intestines outside of the body. She has had many more exams since, which have all confirmed the original diagnosis of a nonviable pregnancy. A little after her first appointment, Aurora started experiencing strong abdominal and back pain that prevent her from working. The circumstances of the pregnancy are seriously affecting her physical and emotional health. Aurora has indicated that “in addition to the physical pain, the stress and suffering resulting from the news have provoked constant sadness, depression, severe stress, insomnia, nightmares, constant tears” ... read full story / add a comment

"A lot of people say we have no control over how this country is run"
These are the opening words of the current television advertisement campaign being run to convince people to vote in Saturday's referendum, and they reflect what most of us already know about the political system which operates in Ireland. The advert however does not go on to explain how only those living in 26 of Ireland's 32 Counties will be given a vote and that a quarter of Ireland's population will be automatically excluded ... read full story / add a comment

For 20 days now, while most of the world has looked on in dumb silence, the city of Bani Walid, in Libya, has been under indiscriminate shelling from Misrata militias, nominally loyal to the NATO imposed National Transitional Council (NTC.) These are the very same Misrata militias who dubbed themselves "The Brigades for the Elimination of Black Skins," as they ethnically cleansed 40,000 Black inhabitants from the city of Tawarga - again with the silent complicity of most of the Western media and political parties, including, shamefully, the parties of the Left. ... read full story / add a comment

Around a thousand marched on Saturday in Dublin on the 16th to demand the freeing of Marian Price, currently 18 months in in solitary confinement in British custody in the Six Counties. Tensions were high due to the recent Gardaí raids on republicans in parts of Dublin and Louth, including the arrests of the mother and two brother of a republican. In addition a heavy Garda presence at the start of the march, along with their taking names and addressses of some marchers, boded ill for the event. However, it passed peacefully. The marchers, led by the banner of the Dublin Free Marian Price Commitee, started from the Garden of Remembrance and as the lead banner and the Pride of Erin flute band from Portadown stepped on to O’Connell Bridge, the end of the march was just setting foot on to the far end of O’Connell Street. ... read full story / add a comment

Despite Western hypocritical attacks on Political Islam, the true enemies of Zionism and the Israeli state have always been secular and radical Palestinian and Arab nationalism. The Muslim Brotherhood have often provided a cover for imperialism, as in Egypt. In Gaza, where the PFLP is strong, Israel prefers Hamas to a secular regime (unless of the quisling Abbas type). Ahmad Sa’adat was kidnapped from Jericho Prison, where he was held under guard by British and foreign forces and effectively handed over to Israel. He was imprisoned for being leader of a group which assassinated the leader of the Moledet-Transfer Party, General Rehavam Zvi. Targeted assassinations are regular Israeli activities but the oppressed are not supposed to indulge in similar actions. Ahmad Sa’dat’s statement below on how negotiations only serve as a camouflage for occupation and conquest are a message for all Palestinian groups and those in the West who choose, despite the evidence, to foster such illusions. ... read full story / add a comment
