''If I thought I could switch this dickhead off without getting done, I don't think I'd have too much of a problem."
SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
UNITED States prosecutors have drawn up secret charges against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, according to a confidential internal email obtained from a private US intelligence company, Stratfor.
In the email, sent to Stratfor intelligence analysts on January 26 last year, the company's vice-president for intelligence, Fred Burton, responded to a media report concerning US investigations targeting WikiLeaks. He wrote: "We have a sealed indictment on Assange."
Underlining the sensitivity of the information - apparently obtained from a US government source - he wrote "Pls protect" and "Not for Pub[lication]

More than 400 people crowded into a lecture theatre at the University of Technology Sydney on February 17 a public forum, “Don’t shoot the messenger: WikiLeaks, Assange and Democracy”. The forum was organised by the Support Assange and WikiLeaks Coalition.

Speakers at the forum included socialist historian Humphrey McQueen, Greens Senator Scott Ludlum, London-based human rights lawyer Jennifer Robinson and Christine Assange, the mother of Julian Assange. Veteran journalist and broadcaster Mary Kostakidis chaired the forum.
“I don’t have to tell you why we are here. Instead, having been introduced as a historian, I shall spend most of my time relating what is happening now to past struggles, and why they relate to the ways in which information is regulated.

Excerpts from Strtafor emails quoted by Senator Scott Ludlum in Australian Senate
"Assange is going to make a nice bride in prison. Screw the terrorist.
He'll be eating cat forever."
Charming! Further emails reveal that the strategies that were enabled
by things like the US Patriot Act which were implemented by the Bush
and Cheney administration after the attacks of 9-11 were being used
not simply to track down and destroy terrorist networks but to track
down and destroy media organisations. This further email says:
"
Take down the money. Go after his infrastructure. The tool we are
using to nail and de-construct Wiki are the same tools used to
dismantle and track aQ [Al Qaeda]. Thank Cheney & 43-
meaning the 43rd President of the United States. It continues:
Big Brother owns his liberal terrorist arse."
Burton states:
"Ferreting out [Julian Assange's] confederates is also key. Find out
what other disgruntled rogues inside the tent or outside [sic]. Pile
on. Move him from country to country to face various charges for the
next 25 years. But, seize everything he and his family own, to include
every person linked to Wiki."

Federal Bureau of Facilitation -- what was the FBI doing with
Stratfor and WikiLeaks?
Crikey Canberra correspondent Bernard Keanen
"Mr Ferdaus is said to have told an informant: 'Allah has given us the
privilege ... He punishes them by our hand. We're the ones.' Posing as
accomplices, the undercover agents then supplied him with grenades,
six machine guns and C-4 explosives." -- BBC, 29 September 2011
"According to the FBI, they arrested Mohamud after he dialed a
cellphone that he thought would detonate a huge bomb - six 55-gallon
drums, diesel fuel and a large box of screws - in a large white van
parked near the tree lighting. But the bomb was a fake built by the
FBI ..." -- LA Times, 28 November 2010
In the past five years, the FBI has developed an outstanding record of
thwarting terror attacks the agency itself has created, providing
Islamic extremists and young men with mental illness with accomplices,
real or fake weapons and logistical support to develop often
ridiculous plots, such as flying a model plane into the Capitol in
Washington.
In that context, the FBI's remarkable behaviour in relation to the
Lulzsec hacker Hector Monsegur, AKA Sabu, begins to make more sense.
Monsegur, a key figure in Lulzsec's hacking spree last year that
targeted some of the world's biggest companies as well as the US
government, was arrested in August by the FBI and immediately
co-operated with them to help them identify other members of the
group. Whether it was a crucial mistake by Monsegur in revealing his
IP address or being outed by other hackers is
unclear,
but the outcome wasn't -- Sabu was now working for the Feds. His help
was critical in the arrests of five other Lulzsec suspects this week.
The arrests, and the revelation that Monsegur -- apparently out of
concern for his children -- was working with law enforcement to lure
out other hackers, is surely a blow to the upper echelons of Anonymous
and will slow the embarrassing series of cracks that have plagued
governments and corporations alike, and provided a window into
secretive industries that we would never otherwise have seen. Activist
Barrett Brown, a high-profile former Anonymous associate (and sometime
Crikey writer),
was also raided, but says he'd been tipped off to the raid and was
able to take action before the FBI arrived.

I have seen it stated elsewhere that it is estimated that about 20% or more of hackers are informants of one sort or another. This would make sense given that most major countries now have their own cyber divisions within their defense systems and given these people are paid to be hackers and would have all sorts of resources and research available to them, it is easy to see how some of these people could become part of the hubs around the various hacker communities.
But the directly paid cyber warriors would be supplemented by a whole slew of others working independently or on contract and another unknown number who have been caught and have been let off so long as they continue to supply information.
It is likely that all the authorities are really interested in is not criminal hacking but political hacking. We see the same in the real world, where huge resources are always directed against any group or movement that even remotely threatens the status quo.
