New National Cyclists Representative Groups Set up
Statement issued by Cyclist.ie on behalf of Dublin Cycling Campaign, Cork Cycling Campaign, Galway Cycling Campaign, Limerick Cycling Campaign, Maynooth Cycling Campaign, Skerries Cycling Initiative and Waterford Walk-Cycle Campaign. These Irish cycling lobby groups have combined to form a new umbrella body, "Cyclist.ie". Its main concerns are ensuring a dramatic improvement in road safety and traffic conditions for cyclists. It views the realisation of these aims as vital to facilitate a marked increase in the numbers of people choosing the bicycle as a means of daily transport. Jump To Comment: 1 2 3support to Shane-somebody has to do it! I think its about time in ireland that we started to admit that motorists are knocking down cyclists on purpose. In a recent case after a woman was knocked off her bike and run over by a lorry with her pelvis broken in 10 places the lorry driver left the scene of the accident later giving the excuse that he was in a confused state due to just breaking up with his girlfriend - all he got was 1,000 euro fine and suspended from driving for one year! And he didn't even apologise! In Canada or North America that would immediatley be a criminal charge and deemed as use of a vehicle as a deadly weapon.
Nice one indeed ye cyclistas! About time that this issue got some good attention. Are there any public transport organisations out there that ye could link up with and get some concerted pressure on. I yearn for the day when I can cycle to the nearest bus stop where there are regular, on time buses running, put my bike on a carrier on the front or back of the bus (or tram indeed) take the bus or tram to where I'm going and hop off with my bike at the other end. Or even better get a really late bus home after a really late night. Thanks and keep it up.
Total agreement with Nora - the affluence that came to Ireland appeared to go straight to motorists' right welly, and they drive as though walkers and cyclists should not be on the road. Without protective legislation, walkers and cyclists are vulnerable minorities who are deprived of their basic human right to go about their business without random or targeted violence from bad drivers.
