Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4To all Dublin City Councillors,
For once in your lives put your petty differences aside and back this motion. The parties of the 'left' are in a majority on city council. It is within the power of Labour, SF, PBP and the Independents to pass this motion on a human rights basis. Would any of these parties support the firing of plastic bullets in Ballymun, Finglas or Cabra? So why is it alright in Ballymurphy, Fermanagh or Crossmaglen?
Human rights campaigner Brenda Downes has released the following statement in relation to the plastic bullet motion. She is the wife of John Downes, who was killed by a plastic bullet fired by the RUC in west Belfast in August 1984.
Her statement said:
“I welcome this initiative by éirígí in highlighting the lethal nature of plastic bullets, particularly after they have been recklessly fired by the PSNI on two separate occasions in less than two months. I appeal to all the councillors on Dublin City Council to back this crucial motion and put pressure on the British government to ban their use. This is a human rights issue that needs to rise above normal party politics.
“Plastic bullets kill. Since their introduction to the Six Counties in the early 1970s, 17 civilians have been killed as a result of their use. Hundreds more have been injured, many seriously.
“I hope that other parties will follow éirígí’s lead and put similar motions to councils across Ireland. Everyone has a role to play in getting plastic bullets banned before someone else is killed or seriously injured.”
has anybody any idea as which councillors will back the motion?
i guess sinn fein and most of the independents will go yes, but what way will the labour party councillors vote?
fianna fail and fine gael unlikely to support the motion imho - shame on them.
Just heard that Dublin City Council have adopted the motion with the backing of the entire council. Its not too often that it happens but on this occassions the politicians have done Dublin proud. Fair play to Louise and eirigi.
