The performance of The National Chamber Choir of Ireland in Carlingford yesterday afternoon was an object lesson in the calm interpretation of words and music combined. A very stimulating concert free of musical bombast. And very very musical. Admission was €8 and the program which was essential reading cost €3. The theme of the recital was Autumn Landscapes. It involved roads, fields, clouds, lost love, time passing, death, lost youth. Even so it proved one thing at least. Brahms still lives. read full story / add a comment

Tonight, Thursday the Dundalk 2016 committee held a moving and extensive Easter commemoration within the wing of Dundalk prison. The last time such an event was held within the walls was in 1928 when republican POWs and internerees were still being held captive before the Gaols final closure in 1931. read full story / add a comment

Using such a wide range of mediums – Kube and Omin hope to visually demonstrate the essence of Graffiti art through their own styles and skills. From sketches used on past murals, to photographs of walls, to graffiti art on canvas – all facets of the artform will be displayed and will give a visual narrative to their 13 years of non-stop graffiti art exploits. The venue in Ravensdale, Co Louth, is a little difficult to find on a dark Autumn evening. However the effort was very worthwhile. The small concert hall is fashioned on the first floor from an old stable. The lighting was dim and warm with the added touch of two candelabra on either side of the platform and I think there were flowers as well. There was seating for about 70 people and the room was almost full by the time the concert started at 8.00 p.m. last night. A glass of wine could be had at the interval. I opted for a cup of coffee in a different room and made the acquaintance of Patrick Barrow and his grandson William from Monasterboice. read full story / add a comment

The captains' drive-in took place in Greenore Golf Club on Sunday 9 March 2008 at 1.20 p.m. The day was bright and breezy. Everyone seemed in good humor. Coffee and biscuits were served outside at the clubhouse before the drive-in and Seán O'Hanlon was on hand at the first tee with champagne immediately before the drive-in happened. The captains for 2008 are Ann Davey and Michael Shields - both keen and energetic golfers. Ann is from NI while Michael is from the republic. read full story / add a comment

The audience in Holy Trinity Heritage Centre, Carlingford, yesterday contributed to immensely to a finely wrought performance by Ensemble Avalon. There was no attention deficit and no disconcerting applause at the end of individual movements. Applause was reserved for the end of each of the four sonatas performed. In a very symmetrical program each of the sonatas had three movements. There was no rocking in the aisles but the applause was appreciative and there was a general air of satisfaction around the Heritge Centre as the performance progressed. The cost of a ticket for this concert was €15. read full story / add a comment

It is scarcely enough to make a gesture towards mental patients and the mentally ill on one day of the year only. However, to mark World Mental Health Day (10 October 2007) I am posting an article which I wrote quite a few weeks ago to suggest to indymedia readers the extent of real globalisation in establishment efforts to overcome the problem of mental illness. However, as with globalisation in other areas, the question arises of how far we are on the right track? read full story / add a comment |
