Shannonwatch.org, a website set up in December 2008 to document US military traffic and rendition flights through Shannon Airport has become the victim of organised international attacks. The attacks which started on January 8th are being repeated, and efforts to keep the website live are currently proving difficult. The website managers are determined that they will not be silenced however, and will continue in one form or another to publish information on military and suspect CIA flights through Shannon. read full story / add a comment

Alrighty netizens? So, the last of the turkey sandwiches have been dusted off and New Year's day hangover has become a memory as faint as that beer stain on the new carpet. Well, we here in Indymedia.ie have a favour to ask. We are hoping you have it in your hearts to extend the season of good will just a little bit longer. Just long enough to come down for banter and dance at a fundraiser we are organizing on January 15th, one of our little irregular efforts to boost the coffers of our decrepit server fund.

As editors, we more than most, realise that Indymedia.ie has seen it's ups and downs in contributions and content over the past while. Editors have come and gone, and the very nature of online publishing and user generated content has been fundamentally changed with the Web 2.0 revolution. But one clear fact remains, once the dust of discussion has settle: the Irish movement have yet to create a media outlet with the reach and scope of Indymedia.ie. Until something better comes along, Indymedia.ie remains a vital communicative node for those in struggle in Ireland, it bonds us together where usually we fracture.

So, here comes the begging hand.....

Dear Ambassador

Further to my telephone call to your office this morning I wish to reiterate some of the points which I made in the conversation with your secretary, and to elaborate on them a little further

1 I am sick to the teeth of the lies you are telling on RTE and in the Irish media about what is happening in Gaza. Israel has killed over 400 people there on the pretext that a cease-fire had been broken unilaterally by Hamas.

You know this is not true.

2 You said that Israel is trying to avoid civilian casualties but that Hamas place their civilians as shields for Hamas soldiers. You know that this is not true. Gaza is smaller in area than our smallest County, Louth, and is over-populated with 1.4 million people before your country reduced the population with murder from the sky.

3 Your Army invaded Gaza prior to en election and in the interregnum between the Presidencies of George W Bush and Barack Obama.

2008 has been a year of ups and downs for the Shell to Sea campaign, however generally the last months of the year have been very positive. This is a brief review of the year and a call-out for people to get involved next year when we expect a big push from Shell and the Government to again try to force this project through. At the moment, we are planning on the assumption that a pipe-laying ship (Solitaire or otherwise) will be back anytime from spring next year, to try to finally lay the offshore pipeline. read full story / add a comment

"He blocks access to our education, we block his access to the opening. - Pa O' Brien ULSU President, advocate of a graduate tax and Fianna Fail member.

Minister Martin Cullen attended the opening of the newly built Irish Chamber Orchestra (ICO) building on University of Limerick campus last Monday evening. Ahead of the scheduled event, ULSU issued a press release headlined "UL Students to block Minister from ICO opening". What actually transpired was an entirely different set of events.

At about 1pm, ULSU officers led an impressive turnout of about 400 students towards the Thomond Bridge on campus to block vehicular access to the ICO. The only other access to the building was via the Living way pedestrian bridge, which ULSU president Pa O'Brien ensured us was being monitored by a fellow SU officer. The fact that the location chosen for the blockade was not the building Cullen intended on attending was originally put down to he assumed tactical naivety of the union officers, but the motives for the location chosen later became apparent. read full story / add a comment

Thirteen years ago today, on November 10th 1995, nine men from Ogoni land were hanged at Port Harcourt prison Nigeria. They had been tried in a military court by the Nigerian dictatorship. One of the men, the famous human rights campaigner Ken Saro Wiwa had been a particular thorn in the side of the Shell oil company, which found itself unable to operate in parts of the Niger Delta because of the work organisating people to peacefully resist against their destructive activities.

In stark proof of who controlled Nigeria at the time, his family had been told by Shell executives that he would be spared if he would help the company. Saro Wiwa preferred to die with honour. read full story / add a comment

Nov. 5th sees the world's first attempted co-ordinated action against commercialisation in education (including against fees for education). So far, activists in 22 countries have signed up to have mass co-ordinated events. This essay seeks to look at some of the issues involved in commercialism in education.

Since we have not reached the level of commercialism in our schools that pervade an education system such as the American one, perhaps now is the time to begin the fight against the commercialism that is present, before it becomes too much to be countered.
