Low Carbon Life. “low carbon” life will require changes in how we live. It will require a shift in public consciousness, as well as a willingness to do without conveniences that may now seem essential. Energy inefficiency and waste are so woven into the fabric of life that it is both very easy for some and very hard for others to change. The business of climate change will create demand for innovation, and will change and reshape markets immediately. Investors will be asking questions to identify companies that will succeed or fail in an environment of increased climate change risk. read full story / add a comment

The City Of Derry Airport is expected to be the first in Europe to officially ban controversial CIA flights transporting terror suspects to secret prisons, it emerged today. The publicly-owned airport confirmed it is working out the practicalities of an ``anti-rendition'' policy after discussions with Amnesty International. At the minute the practicalities of this are being looked at by council officers with a view to bringing a motion before the council - I obviously hope we can do that Councillor Gerry Diver Airport Committee read full story / add a comment

On parts of the continent and in the UK, garden allotments are popular- if you live in a flat or don't have access to a garden it's a great way to grow your own veggies, get more self- sufficient and keep money out of the pockets of big supermarkets. In the UK they cost anything from £16-£50 a year to rent. It will not be possible for much longer to transport food from the other side of the planet due to the rising cost of oil and gas, and besides this is not environmentally sustainable. In addition, harvests are failing or producing less due to chaotic climate change. As a result the cost of food is and will continue to climb. read full story / add a comment

The current edition of the Mayo Advertiser carries an article on proceedings at Mayo Council's monthly meeting. This month, Sinn Féin Cllr Gerry Murray proposed a motion calling on the Council to demand that the government renegotiate the current deal, whereby all the profits of the sale of the natural gas in the Corrib field will leave the country and go to the shareholders in Shell, Statoil and Marathon Oil. Sinn Féin want to know why the money can't fund hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure projects in this country. Cllr Murray pressed the FG Cllr present to say whether whether if, should that party be in govt after the general election, Enda Kenny would continue with the present policy of giving away the country's resources, but no answer was forthcoming. The first part of the article is below and their is a link to the full piece: http://www.mayoadvertiser.com/index.php?aid=1316 read full story / add a comment

We are all always told that the Health Service is rotten, broken, and flawed. This is not because this is true but because the FG/Labour run media conspire to keep the truth silent. Anyone who says that the health service is anything but a mess is critisiced and ridiculed. While America leads the world in insularism and denial, Australia is the world leader in complacency and apathy. No cultural equivalent for the Oz expression, “she’ll be right, mate”, exists anywhere – notwithstanding the variation of “who gives a shit?” Today, non-involvement is proving to be a very costly cultural habit. America has become the world’s most hated nation and will soon attract very real consequences for its actions, one of which is the acquisition of Australia as a colonial trophy. Australia remains an international laughing stock under the servile leadership of lackey prime minister, John Howard; Aussies are experiencing their eleventh year under the rule of the most slavish, gutless, lying, duplicitous, cringing, government on record. No other leader in world history has displayed the servility and cowardice of John Howard. When America says jump, the despicable little coward, Howard, says how high, boss! read full story / add a comment

Islamist militants and terrorist groups pose a particular danger to Iraqi women. Many women’s organizations and activists inside Iraq have documented the increasing Islamist threats to women: the pressure to conform to certain dress codes, the restrictions in movement and behaviour, incidents of acid thrown into women’s faces and even targeted killings. After the U.S. invasion in 2003, many women in Basra, for example, reported that they were forced to wear a headscarf or restrict their movements in fear of harassment from men. Female students at the University of Basra reported that since the war ended groups of men began stopping them at the university gates, shouting at them if their heads were not covered read full story / add a comment |
