Social cohesion has never been more fragile than in the present. Developing an effective survival strategy in an age of bankrupt ideologies (political and other) is a challenging but not impossible task. All known political ideologies have failed or are failing (including capitalism). A poster has appeared throughout the basque territories for an event to be celebrated on the 21st of January 2006 in Barakaldo (Vizcaja) called by the illegalised party Batasuna. Batasuna are the political wing of ETA, and spanish lawyers argue incessantly over how far the ban on one effects the other and where the line between "Terrorism Law" and "Right to Association" is to be drawn. Lets put it this way, other than journalists or spooks, not many people will go this gig who aren't supporters of Batasuna (and therefore ETA). But they do like to split hairs. & accordingly when the association of victims of terror in Spain, (which mostly represents victims of Basque seperatist violence) pointed out that in the poster there is clearly visible the "logo" of ETA, they called for the Spanish high court to ban the meeting. read full story / add a comment

The management of the Jutrzenka factory- a popular producer of sweets - has dismissed Dariusz Skrzypczak, the chairman of the Solidarity trade union in Goplana company in Poznan (Poland) (from January 2005 owned by Jutrzenka). He was fired on disciplinary grounds for the interview published in local press. Although Skrzypczak had only confirmed the fact that Jutrzenka had introduced new conditions of wages, which are unfavorable for most of the workers of Goplana, the management of the plant acknowledged those words as harmful to the company. It is the second attempt to fire Skrzypczak - the first one took place at the beginning of year 2005. read full story / add a comment

The subversion of law and ‘order’ has been effectively and completely realised, not by revolutionary, rebel, insurgent groups and associated ideologies, but by the custodians of social order themselves. The process was essentially (d)evolutionary not revolutionary. An elementary student would have little difficulty understanding the character of the ‘New World Disorder’ and the forces that created this new social nightmare. Irish Ferries: The significance of the December 9th mobilisations How was it that demonstrations of over 150,000 workers could be followed almost immediately by the defeat of the Irish Ferries struggle and the demobilisation of the demonstrators? Many saw the size of the demonstrations as by themselves representing the political mobilisation of the working class. In truth it only raised the question. The workers began by marching loyally behind the union leaderships. The issue is where they will end up. The march demonstrated the potential power of the working class, but above all it demonstrated the continuing ability of the union bureaucracy to confine and limit that power. However, that ability of the union leadership is itself constrained by the pressure of events and dependent on the workers remaining passive. (continues at link) read full story / add a comment

Editors` introduction The prospect of the G8 summit taking place in Gleneagles, Scotland, in July 2005 promised perhaps the excitement of Genoa, Seattle and the other anti-capitalist mobilizations of recent years, on UK soil. But the movement seemed to lose momuntum after the last Iraq war, and some of us wondered wether the protests would resemble more the last few Mayday demonstrations – with protesters held for hours in a police cordon designed to bore people into submission – rather than the exhiliratation and energy of the 1999 Carnival against Capital. Moreover, most of the predicted crowds were mostly expected to gather around the call by Bob Geldof to protest peacefully to “send a message” to the politicans, rather than attempt to close down the Summit. Anarchists and Prison Struggle A while ago I was irritated to see a well-known Anarchist magazine use prisoner support work as an example of "single-issue" politics. The comment may have been merely thoughtless, rather than anything else, but the fact that it appears to have gone unnoticed, and certainly unchallenged, reflects the poverty of current Anarchist thought in relation to the prison struggle, and the marginalization of what was once very much a central issue for revolutionaries in general, and for Anarchists in particular. While some Anarchists may regard the prison struggle as just another single-issue, for increasing numbers of working-class people, prison is a central part of their lives read full story / add a comment

The “New American Century” (PNAC) and the “Thousand Year Reich”, shared a similar preposterous vision; a crude blend of wishful thinking, fantasy and religiosity. However, the chronologically modest American ‘vision’ is no less dangerous and destructive a model; in fact, the potential for destruction on a scale never before seen is inherent is the ‘New American (graveyard) Century’. read full story / add a comment

General Sir Michael Rose (1940–) is a British soldier born in what was then British India. Rose was educated at St Edmund Hall, Oxford and the Sorbonne. He joined the Coldstream Guards later serving with the Parachute Regiment. He was Commander of 22 SAS in 1980 and took control of the operation to free the hostages during the Iranian Embassy Siege. After returning to the regular army, his best-known appointment was as Commander UNPROFOR Bosnia 1994-95 during the aftermath of the Yugoslav Wars. On January 9, 2006, Rose called for Tony Blair to be impeached over the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, saying on BBC Radio 4's Today programme "To go to war on what turns out to be false grounds is something that no one should be allowed to walk away from." Slavoj Žižek analyses the US propganda machine's attempt to make torture acceptable in the series "24", which takes up the Alan Dershowitz "ticking terrorist bomb" scenario and decides that torturing will work. It's interesting that Hollywood is still seen as "liberal" and "anti-patriotic" when it performs such a vital role in spreading propaganda to the citizens of the US. Žižek discusses the method in which Himmler's subordinates were able to carry out their vile work and suggests that the same process is at work in US culture. read full story / add a comment

I would like to read a little about the life and politics of James Connolly. I know that there is a book out about him at the moment (see below) – but assume it is but one of many. SEANAD leader Mary O'Rourke was last night in hot water after saying some of her campaign helpers had worked "like blacks". On the otherhand, there have been few Dail or Seanad politicians as critical of Irish racism and indeed, State immigration policies, as Mary O'Rourke. The Irish company "Daniel Technologies" was gloating about it's role in a contract signed between the Irish military and an Israeli manufacturer of helmuts yesterday. In a "puff" piece, free of any political or social context in the Sunday Business Post yesterday Stephen Roe, managing director of Daniel Technologies, said the awarding of the contract last month followed a “tough and lengthy'‘ test and evaluation period. No mention was made of the fact that the Israeli company in question calls the IDF its most important customer.
