Cuba Support Group Ireland is pleased to announce the dates and venues of a nationwide speaking tour by Canadian academic and author, Keith Bolender, a world expert on the blockade of Cuba. His talk will be based on his latest book, Cuba Under Siege: American Policy, the Revolution and Its People. In it, Bolender explores how Cuban society has been affected by 50 years of ‘non stop hostility from the world’s most powerful nation’. He offers extensive historical analysis, firsthand interviews and expert comment. Most significantly, perhaps, Bolender puts the blockade of Cuba into the historical military context of the tactic of siege and analyses the psychological impacts of this on the besieged population, with some remarkable insights from historical parallels. Through this contextualisation, the potential of American policy to deliver its stated intentions is evaluated with uncomfortable conclusions for policy makers. read full story / add a comment

Submission to the White Paper on Defence Government should be tried under Nuremberg Charter.
We are a collective of women; some of us very elderly. Some of us directly experienced wars; some of us have spent time in jail opposing war; the build up to war. We have buried our dead because of war. We have looked after and cared for those physically and psychologically damaged by war. We have experienced domestic violence by men, who have been traumatized by their time in war. We have suffered through the growth of the armed industry and the cost of filling the coffers or the armament industry merchants; the rough the devastation of the social services of our country. This is not only in our Country; this is worldwide read full story / add a comment

Despite official enquiries into the Dublin/Monaghan Bombings, no satisfactory answers have ever been found as to who carried them out. Even though these Bombings caused the biggest loss of life of a single operation of the whole Troubles, garda investigations were wound up after three months—with no proper explanation of what had happened; no prosecutions were ever brought. read full story / add a comment

As well as covering the latest Syrian developments, Yassamine Mather writes on the effects of sanctions in Iran. The events we are now witnessing in the Middle East, the “United States’ accidental diplomacy” regarding Syria1 and renewed talk of the resolution of Iran’s nuclear programme were unexpected a few weeks ago. Having declared that the use of chemical weapons was the “red line” the Syrian leadership should not cross, the US has now accepted Russian proposals for a ‘diplomatic solution’ read full story / add a comment

Tariq Ali looks at the various "revolutions" in the Middle East and writes: The idea that the Saudis, Qatar, and Turkey backed by NATO are going to create a revolutionary democracy or even a democratic set-up is challenged by what is happening elsewhere in the Arab world. Full text at link. Ever since the beginning of the Arab Spring there has been much talk of revolutions. Not from me. I’ve argued against the position that mass uprisings on their own constitute a revolution, i.e., a transfer of power from one social class (or even a layer) to another that leads to fundamental change. The actual size of the crowd is not a determinant—members of a crowd become a revolution only when they have, in their majority, a clear set of social and political aims. If they do not, they will always be outflanked by those who do, or by the state that will recapture lost ground very rapidly. read full story / add a comment

Ireland could and should have a Universal Pension for everyone over 65. it could be paid for principally by standard rating the current tax-break for private pensions. More than 80% of benefit of the current tax break goes to the 20% with highest earnings. A Universal Pension would be simpler, fairer and more just as well as being sustainable in the decades ahead. No existing pensioner would lose out and many would experience an increase in the Universal Pension. In particular, those adults aged 66 years and older, in respect of whom reduced payments are now made due to their status as ‘Qualified Adults’, would receive a Universal Pension in their own right. read full story / add a comment

This talk by Dr. Vincent Durac aims to increase public awareness about the current political and humanitarian crisis in Syria. Beginning in 2011 after the al-Assad regime began a violent crackdown on protestors demanding greater economic and political freedoms, the situation has become increasingly unstable and of humanitarian concern. In 2013, Syria is on the brink of Western military intervention further complicating the West's relationship with the Middle East. The goal of this lecture is to increase public knowledge of this conflict and therefore will be delivered in an accessible manner outlining the main points of the current crisis. It aims to address the following questions: What is happening? Why is it happening? Who is involved? What are the consequences of intervention? read full story / add a comment
